sunnyday Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Hi - I would like to buy walkie-talkies for adult use........to keep outdoors 'in touch' with indoors.... Wondered if anyone could make a recommendation - I have absolutely no idea what to buy Make and source would be great! Thanks
Steve Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Do you mean just for use in the garden/house sunnyday? You do know that walkie talkies have a pretty limited range don't you? Although technically they're good for a mile or so, in any built up areas they don't go anywhere near that far.
Inge Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 we used to have a landline phone with 2 handsets we used as intercoms.. worked really well - and meant we could answer the phone outside too..
sunnyday Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Ah ....... outdoor area at pre-school.........hmmm......just behind our building and we are on the 1st floor - not sure whether that would make any difference?
sunnyday Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 we used to have a landline phone with 2 handsets we used as intercoms.. worked really well - and meant we could answer the phone outside too.. Thanks Inge - we don't have a landline - we could, of course, just use our mobiles.......but that opens a whole new 'can of worms'!
Upsy Daisy Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 We have some Binatone Walkie Talkies which we use on caravan holidays and when my girls are playing outside. They have been really robust and reliable with good battery lives. The ones we've got are a bit out of date but these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Binatone-Latitude-...8445&sr=1-1 look like a more up to date equivalent.
sunnyday Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) Thanks Upsy Daisy! Just had a look - not a bad price either, thanks again Edited February 4, 2011 by sunnyday
Steve Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I was going to suggest Motorola which we've had before and are also available on Amazon, but Upsy Daisy's Binatone ones look very good!
Cait Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think they are similar to ours, we got ours from Argos and they have a surprising range! We took one up to the top of our garden when we first got them so I could find out the range and we could hear some fishermen chatting to each other in the Solway!!! I think it was them with the strong signal - but it makes you very much aware that other people can 'listen in' as they are an insecure radio wave.
sunnyday Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Thanks Steve and Cait - I shall go and look at Motorola too.....
Guest Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Hi Sunny, those binatone ones are what we got. They work fine for us at a bit of a distance. Although they are for adult use the children love to use them too. They are cheap enough not to worry about them being bundled in when we pack away.
Gezabel Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Another fan of binatone used everyday in built up area over distance of about half a mile or so, No problems except when we forget to put them on the charging base at night!!
sunnyday Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Thanks Suzie and Geraldine - I have just ordered the 'Binatone' - woohoo - looking forward to using them! Love the idea of the children using them too - great fun!
Guest Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Hi everyone, I just thought I would add that we also use Binatone, to ensure that we have a link between staff indoors and outdoors and they are brilliant. Just one downside, we are a pack away setting, so we have to remember to charge them up every morning, before we use them!! its the remembering that is the problem.! Zoe
lynned55 Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 What is the volume like? We have some that work fine but with all the noise of the children are almost impossible to hear what someone is saying.
Guest jayr Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Hi - I would like to buy walkie-talkies for adult use........to keep outdoors 'in touch' with indoors.... Wondered if anyone could make a recommendation - I have absolutely no idea what to buy Make and source would be great! Thanks We have just got walkie-talkies for adult use, two on a rechargeable base station by B.T work all round our setting , very pleased with the performance. Hope this helps you. Jayr
purplewednesday1 Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 ...We use binatone which have worked brilliantly for us. One hazard is being able to pick up the taxis talking to each other which can make you jump! Children find the taxi conversations quite interesting tho' I think they think they're aliens! pw x
sunnyday Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Woohoo! You have to just love Amazon - my walkie-talkies ordered on Friday are here already!
sunnyday Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 That's fab, over! Roger - over and out..... Mr Sunnyday seems to think that to test the 'range' he should go to the pub tonight taking one with him
Steve Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Of course, if he does this and it works, he'll never be uncontactable in the pub again...
