mundia
In the unlikely event that the skies clear first thing tomorrow morning, take a look westwards to see this very rare lunar eclipse that coincides with the winter solstice. If clear, around 7.15-8.00am would be a good time! This event only happens about every 400 years!. For anyone going to stonehege this year, (wednesday), enjoy your celebrations. I cant quite make it this year.

Cait
low lying snow cloud bank prevented us from seeing it - but they made a pretty picture on their own from dark blue at the bottom to soft lilac, pink, then peach, yellow, green and finally meeting the blue of the sky. really pretty, like a horizontal rainbow. Guest
Oh dear-sorry you lot. Afraid we had a marvellous view of it. We opened our west facing bedroom curtains at 6:30am and the moon was central and low to our picture window. We overlook fields so it was an uninterupt view. While we got ready for work with a low bed room light the moon was doing its thing. It wasn't that dark as the laying snow was reflectiing lots of light and at 7:40am when we left the moon had disappeared completely but a pink sunrise was coming up in the east. The moving cresent shadow on the moons surface was very clear. Shame you'll all have to wait another 400 years to get a chance to see it again. It was beautiful especially with the snowy scene Edited December 21, 2010 by Guest

mundia
Wow biccy, where were you looking from..Scotland, Ireland, overseas? Glad one amongst us saw it in real life. The next winter solstice total lunar eclipse will be in 2094, but not visible from the most of the UK. Next year will see two lunar eclipses, but neither fall at such an auspicious time. Steve
Wow, that first one is a fantastic photo of the moon. Isn't the internet a brilliant way to share things - wish it had been around when I was 10 and newly addicted to astronomy...
