What training would you like to see available and what sort of cost would you pay per delegate? Is there any area in particular that you feel is not covered at the moment (!) thumperrabbit Posted October 29, 2015 Share Posted October 29, 2015 I would love to do Speech & Language training but it is so expensive - I would like to do any training to be honest, unfortuately we can't afford to do anything except the mandatory stuff now. I don't think it will be long before more and more settings get Requires Improvement because of the lack of training being completed - although saying that according to County all their courses are still full alebit it with Day Nursery staff rather than preschool playgroup staff 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mouseketeer Posted October 30, 2015 Share Posted October 30, 2015 (edited) Like thumperrabbit anything really, other than statutory safeguarding as that is about all that comes up on our county training, I'm beginning to get really annoyed when you see eyfs training on our county site for training that looks interesting ie maths in the outdoor environment and actually local to us, only to find when you try to book staff on it get rejected as 'schools only' ...gggrrrr we are eyfs too why can't we go, this is an area ofsted will look at, our county core training says all staff should update practical inclusion every 3 yrs, I managed to get 1 person on it this year, the rest haven't done it since 2009 :-/ Edited October 30, 2015 by Mouseketeer 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mouseketeer ,,,do you know who your school forum rep is for early years...perhaps this is something they could tackle? im fascinated as to how our lea is going to pass any SEND inspection...no training for years ...no senco for borough and little support for parents ...but that's another conversation. lsp Posted October 30, 2015 Share Posted October 30, 2015 We can apply for the basics through county - first aid, food hygiene, child protection/safeguarding (intro and lead practioner), health and safety etc. We also have a range of speech and language (Talkabout) courses. After reading some comments on here, I think we quite lucky - at the moment ..... Lots more cutbacks to come next year I think. It would be great to have more of the sort of courses that used to inspire us, eg. encourage us to really think about what it is to be a 2 year old going into a setting on that first day. I know that we have procedures in place but I can remember doing wonderful training in the past that just made me stop, take a step back and think - oh yes!!! We could probably not afford to pay more than £50 for anyone to attend a course. Change may be in the offing...although it is VERY early days and may not come to anything at all! I am a trained trainer and I guess it may be something I could consider! trying to work out what gaps are in the market ......what about business skills? anyone think there might be something there too? Guest Posted October 30, 2015 Share Posted October 30, 2015 Sorry to jump in on your post finleysmaid _ I have been running my own business alongside working as the registered manager of a pack away term time only setting (2 days per week). I started off offering managerial cover for holidays/sickness but would be interested like you to know if other settings would be willing to buy in other services! I hope you find a niche - in Lincolnshire we do get support from our local authority but the courses other than mandatory training are becoming less and less available! I don't know what your thoughts are regarding some current training (NVQ) not having enough of an emphasis on actual child development? Certainly the 2 settings that I work at often say how they feel that the basics are missing meaning that as managers we have to fill in the gaps as the very mention of miles stones or developmental levels if often met with a blank stare!! EYFS terminology - what it actually means in laymen terms may be a good one too. Positive behaviour techniques - boys and mark making which may fit in with your areas of expertise (environment). I do feel there might be a market for a 'quick fix' evening session....sort of wham bam thank you mam! couple of hours ...perhaps not workshop based but with a decent amount of content. We have an SEN trainer who used to do that in this area....open hall lots of delegates ....cheap (£20) him talking and slide show kind of thing Thanks for all your replies so far...keep them coming! even if I don't do anything like this I think it's really important to know what people are finding usefull Any successful training out there?? We have quite a varied training directory, although for someone like me who has been round the block a few times it does get a bit samey!! But at least it is offered even though it is a bit expensive. Not sure on that either. Sometimes just st getting together with other settings can be just as good. Ofsted did not see that as training though.
