zigzag Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Does anybody have a fabulous fail safe bird feeder receipe that is suitable for the children to make? Tried something years ago and it was a disaster, so have not tried since.
Panders Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 W ell it needs to be lard that you use. We just mix all the seeds together with it squishing it all together then we make it into balls and put in fridge to set and use it as you would fat balls. If you want something to hang up, Ido have a cooked recipe I can look out for you. Also have you tried RSPB site? 1
finleysmaid Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 we cant use lard ...for religious reasons so we made apple hedgehogs ....apples with sunflower seeds stuck in for spikes! 1

Froglet Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 we cant use lard ...for religious reasons so we made apple hedgehogs ....apples with sunflower seeds stuck in for spikes! Finleysmaid - they sound lovely. Think I might make some to link in with our collective worship theme (reverence and respect for animals) which includes taking care of them.
Cait Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 You could probably use vegetable suet though, couldn't you?
narnia Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 yes you could; veggie suet would work very well
finleysmaid Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 veggie suet is not good for birds the rspb suggest that you do not use it for feeders.
Cait Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 veggie suet is not good for birds the rspb suggest that you do not use it for feeders. Ah. I did not know that! I wonder what it has in it? Could block margarine substitute? Could you bake seedy biscuits?
Guest Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Pipe cleaners and threaded cheerios. They managed on their own and also provides hook to hang on fence etc.
Inge Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Ah. I did not know that! I wonder what it has in it? Could block margarine substitute? Could you bake seedy biscuits? Block margarine etc is also not good for birds.. birds need high levels of saturated fat, such as raw suet and lard. They need the high energy content to keep warm in the worst of the winter weather, since their body reserves are quickly used up, particularly on cold winter nights. The softer fats can easily be smeared onto the feathers, destroying the waterproofing and insulating qualities.
zigzag Posted November 10, 2013 Author Posted November 10, 2013 Have found a great feeder, smother a toilet roll in peanut butter and roll in seeds until covered. Make four holes in the bottom and thread two sticks through for perches. Guess who is going to be up to their ears in peanut butter tomorrow!!
Panders Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 does it have to be salt free peanut butter?
Panders Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 just googled appears you can use peanut butter
Rufus Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 (edited) We can't use peanut butter because of allergies. I normally do the lard bird feeder, although I did try making one out of an orange juice carton once and that was quite successful but I can't remember where I got the instructions from.
