sunnyday Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 At present we are using a lap-top at pre-school - for our children to play games........ I am a little 'concerned' that this is now a little 'out dated' and would like to buy some sort of tablet for them.........however I have absolutely no idea what to buy........ Looking for a 10 inch - something or other..........no internet access so would need to download apps....... Any advice please :1b
Rea Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 I'm wondering the same thing for my dad. Ipads are too expensive, I need something simple for browsing the internet.
Susan Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 We have a Google Nexus 7 but you need to have an internet connection.
Steve Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Hi both - Rather than reproduce it, here's a link to another conversation where I gave my tuppence worth. I wouldn't necessarily throw out your laptop yet though sunnyday. By all means complement the laptop with a tablet, but although tablets are very lovely and portable and provide a great user interface, they can't match the comfort of a keyboard & mouse/pad for entering information. Also, they have certain limitations - as we discovered recently for example, you can't perform a 'drag and drop' function in many situations, in the same way you can with a traditional PC. Since the main function of moving your finger over a screen replaces the mouse, and this tends simply to move the screen, you end up not dragging anything! Anyway, be on the look out (as I mention in the link) for rear facing cameras, and also be aware that on the whole they're not as robust as laptops (or to be more accurate, the glass is more brittle) so a good quality case is probably worth spending your money on.
Steve Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Ah - yes Susan. The Google Nexus 7 is a good device but one of those I'd exclude from consideration if I ever wanted to be able to take photos (see previously linked post).
finleysmaid Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 haha great minds think alike sunnyday !! 1
Inge Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 had a nice bit written out and internet went down and lost it!!! We have 2 at home.. both android.. not into ipads... and we went into shops, felt them, checked battery length which also had a bearing on which we bought.. no good having one that needed recharging after a few hours.. size of screen.. we have a 7 inch Samsung which is also got a 3g connection when we put a sim in it.. very useful when out and about, have a PAYG card in it .. and a 10 inch which was a good price for what we wanted... for us it was as much knowing the right questions to ask about them as having a recommended make etc... and for a preschool think the cases to protect it a bit would dictate what is useful
Panders Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Not at all of any help - but I just got an iPad through my Tesco rewards which had built up and I didn't have any plans for them. just beginning to get used to it do think it too fragile for nursery though! 1

HMV do a brilliant kevlar ipad case which has been tested and is robust enough to survive being dropped on concrete, cost about 50 pounds but worth every penny and allows me to breath freely when I see my little people charging around with it to show everyone what they have done Edited February 19, 2013 by max321
Guest Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Despite the price I really do LOVE LOVE LOVE my iPad. Best gadget EVER!
sunnyday Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 Thanks Scarlettangel..........don't think we have enough 'pennies' for an ipad
Guest sn0wdr0p Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I just got the Maplin catalogue today and there are quite a few tablets in it. All of which have front and rear cameras on. The samsung galaxy Tab2 is £199 or Versus Touch Tab 7 Dual Core is only £119.99. Personally I know nothing about IT so cannot make any further comment re quality or technical aspects. I am very tempted by the versus one as we already have an iPad but could do with one in each room for staff to do Tapestry obs. It goes up by about £20 for each extra inch of screen. Might be worth having a look as there were loads of others on.
Steve Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Is that the Galaxy Tab 2 7 or 10 inch snowdrop? If it's the 10" that's a very good price, if it's the 7 inch, not so good. :1b
Steve Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Ok - I think those are probably cheaper at Amazon at the moment. Although it depends on memory differences I guess.
