finleysmaid Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Ok so in brief... child at after school club has disclosed a safeguarding issue about a school friend (who we know) Myself and colleague have recorded and told the parent of the 'diclosee' at the end of session (who happens to work in a safeguarding capacity) she spoke to the school...as did we. The head said "oh you know that thing (we were in the middle of the playground!) I know about it...we've recorded it so don't worry! I said I would give her a copy of our paperwork which I attempted to do today but was unable to get hold of her. I don't really trust the school...so do I pass this on and let them deal with it...or do I call the MASH team and speak to them about it....or do I do something else?????? what would you do???
Upsy Daisy Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I wouldn't rely on someone else, personally. I would report it to the MASH team but let them know about the conversation with the head teacher. I think you would be open to criticism if the head teacher doesn't report it and the child comes to harm. If you've done it yourself you can be sure that they have all the information available to you. 2
narnia Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 YOU call MASH..........first thing tomorrow. Do not leave it to anyone else.Do it.If it has already been reported, then you may hold the final piece of the jigsaw. If it hasn't been, then you are helping to protect a child. Good luck 2
blondie Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 same as upsy daisy -report it yourself and mention the school conversation. Make copies of everything and add that you have spoken to MASH and give contact name with all notes to the school. Is head the only lead s/g officer - deputy head is also s/g lead at local school - maybe phone school make an appointment to see head. Keep notes of all you do when trying to contact /speak to head etc.,
Panders Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I agree with the others Finleysmaid, if it were in my county and I wasn't totally sure what to do, I would be able to call an Area Safeguarding Officer and discuss issues about my concerns, she would then advise me what to do next.
finleysmaid Posted June 26, 2017 Author Posted June 26, 2017 Humm thanks guys...think i'd probably come to the same conclusion but (and don't take this the wrong way!) we have had a really rough time with the school and I wanted them to do the right thing! I will speak to the head in the morning and then catch up with MASH. problem is I know it doesn't meet any thresholds ..but as you say Narnia it may be another piece of the puzzle...this job is so bl***y hard sometimes. 3
narnia Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Yes it is........................but it is the job xx
zigzag Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Totally agree with everyone else, action needs to be taken by you, as hard as it is. It may not meet thresholds now but what if this escalates quickly and paperwork is still sitting on the heads desk unreported. You would never forgive yourself. I hate this bit of the job and have been in a 'do I or don't I?' Situation before and it is rotten. Let us know how it all goes finleysmaid.
finleysmaid Posted June 27, 2017 Author Posted June 27, 2017 Have spoken to school head (DSL) who was very defensive and said she had dealt with it but I was told that it was none of my business what she had done as the child was not at my setting (quite right I guess!) Mash not interested ...ive done what I should. bit frustrating ..i'll keep an eye on it...not much more I can do at the moment. Thanks for the help though.
blondie Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 at least you have done all you can - make notes on what happened today and then file away securely
narnia Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 The head was out of order.................and Mash need a kick up the tail end........... ( I had a similar experience with Mash), but at least you tried, so well done ...............make dated notes and put them in your confidential folder. xx
sunnyday Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 You gave it your best shot - hopefully this has let the Head know that you mean business
