sunnyday Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 My main thought was 'have I got a spare 20 quid  But seriously I am really interested and think I will invest.......mind you I have to say that I am not a huge fan of ECERS not sure if that has any bearing........
Guest Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I posted the following when this document was launched a couple of weeks ago - I hope it helps: Posted 11 March 2015 - 09:09 PM At the 4 Children conference yesterday they launched the new Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Well-being Scales (SSTEW). It is in the same series as ECERS and ITERS and looks to me as if it could be very useful, so thought I'd give everyone the heads up. It is being used for the SEED research so settings that have been visited for this will already know it. Although it is designed for scoring, like ECERS and ITERS, it could also be used as a tool for self-assessment through general discussion with staff. The areas it looks at are: Building trust, confidence and independence · self-regulation and social development · encouraging choices and independent play · planning for small group and individual interactions/ adult deployment Social and emotional well-being · supporting socio-emotional well-being Supporting and extending language and communication · encouraging children to talk with others · staff actively listen to children and encourage children to listen · staff support children's language use · sensitive responsiveness Supporting learning and critical thinking · supporting curiosity and problem-solving · encouraging sustained shared thinking through storytelling, sharing books, singing and rhymes · encouraging sustained shared thinking in investigation and exploration · supporting concept development and higher-order thinking Assessing learning and language · using assessment to support and extend learning and critical thinking · assessing language development It is available from Trentham Books £19.99. Sorry, but struggling to create a link - perhaps some clever can add one for me? By the way, I don't get commission!!!
Wildflowers Posted March 27, 2015 Author Posted March 27, 2015 [...] it could also be used as a tool for self-assessment through general discussion with staff. That's what I was hoping, so thanks. Interesting areas!
Guest Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I've looked at it in a bit more detail now and still think we will use it for staff discussion, but also for peer observation. I think it looks much more useful than ECERS, ITERS etc as they focus so much on the equipment etc. This looks so much more at interactions. It is comparatively easy to provide the right resources, but its much harder to ensure quality interactions.
starsdance Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I have ordered one and hope it will be here in the next couple of days. As we were breaking up for Easter I decided on free snail mail I am hoping that we can use it as a staff team to look at our setting and ourselves objectively...... I will let you know if that works!
Guest Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Mm not sure about this, like Sunnyday I hate ECCRs with a passion. Looks similar to me We use WBI scales and I really like that. We use it not only to access children but areas of our provision also
mundia Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I dislike ECERS too, and am a big WBI fan, but am hoping this one might help us to get a clearer handle on Shared Sustained Thinking. I have yet to examine further.

mundia Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Yes that's it dreamgirl. I was just being early morning lazy to write in full!
dreamgirl Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Yes that's it dreamgirl. I was just being early morning lazy to write in full! Don't blame you!
starsdance Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 It's arrived and I have had a flick through tonight. I can already see where it can be used to promote better interaction from the staff as were we to be observed we would have scored very poorly in that area. Hopefully by seeing in written in black and white and not just coming from me will make them pull their socks up. 1
Rob6692 Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Hello all, just thought I'd revive this convo. I'm really interested in this scale, but am yet to acquire or read one myself, so I wondered how you've all found it? I was quite glad to see a scale that focused on adult-child interactions and I have quite high hopes for its potential. As much as ECERS and ITERS are a pain, I do think they're valuable resources to be used occassionally. Maybe not quite as formally as they're intended, but they offer a good reminded of some good practices etc.. I definitely like WBI though, when used properly!
Wildflowers Posted May 27, 2015 Author Posted May 27, 2015 I went thought the scale descriptions very carefully with our setting in mind and identified some areas for important discussion within our team and some actions to take. 1
SueFinanceManager Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Have you seen the articles By Kathy Brodie about Sustained Shared thinking on here....just go the home page here and look at Latest Articles
Rob6692 Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Yes I read them a while back, thanks. I have read quite a lot around SST, which is why I'm so interested in the new scale

Hi Starsdance just wondering if you have had any positive results from using the SSTEW with your staff and interaction as feel my staff now need a refresh on this?
