narnia
what do you think?? Several villages around where I live are planning to sow red poppies ready for next year, the Centenary of The Great War, World War 1. It's a simple, low-cost tribute to the fallen of all wars and I am writing to my parish council to ask them to consider it. I am also going to sow lots in my garden and at my setting. In Flanders fields, the poppies grow..........................can they grow in YOUR neighbourhood/preschool/school/nursery ??

Melba
Please look at the planting instructions. Poppies will only germinate in disturbed ground. How sad would it be if none of them grew.

Cait
Hmm, I'm not sure about the disturbed ground bit as they happily self sow year after year in grass verges near my daughter. I will do some research though

narnia
Thank you.......... I knew it must have come from somewhere, and it's such a wonderful idea..............I'm really going to town on this one!
sunnyday
I had a conversation a few weeks back with Mr S and said "we need to grow poppies next year" - I thought it was my idea - but bet it had crept in from something that I had read........anyway I think it's the best idea whoever it belongs to! :1b This Armistice day our village is (at last) having a war memorial erected/dedicated........when this was being discussed at Parish Council meetings - the idea was raised that one side would need to be left 'un-engraved' (think I just invented that word) to enable there being enough space to allow for the names of the fallen from our village in present and/or future conflicts - shudder moment that.

Guest p0rridge
What a wonderful Idea, as a playgroup we have been involved with rememberance day for a couple of years, making poppy wreaths and poppies to distribute. As a gardener I love this idea and will start collecting seed heads tomorrow.
