'Child Art', by Peter Dixon

I want to paint sunshine,

moonbeams and stars.

I want to paint hedgehogs

and rainbows in jars.

I want to paint laughter,

clouds filled with rain,

music and songbirds

again and again.

I don't want to paint Monets,

Miros or tones

textures and shadings,

peppers and bones.

I want to paint paintings

of things that I see,

grandmas and cuddles

belonging to me.

Your Precious Feet

So small and so sweet

Tiny toes all in a row

Catch them quick

before they grow

A keepsake we've created now

so when you're big

you'll see how

Once upon a time

they were...

your precious feet

so small and so sweet!

Footprints Recall

Two little feet, ten little toes,

Leave their impressions today.

Soon they will wear two little shoes,

And be running and jumping at play.

Two little feet, too little time,

Before they are walking to school,

Kicking a rock, or skipping a rope,

Wading a puddle or jumping a pool.

Two little feet, One little child,

Will soon go their own way,

But footprints in my mind recall,

They stood here yesterday.

Someday I'll jump through puddles,

Take a stroll or run a race.

Someday I'll walk across the street,

Or maybe walk in space,

Someday I'll scale a mountain,

Or I'll join a ballet corps.

Someday I'll walk a tightrope,

Or explore the ocean floor.

Someday these feet will do some things,

That only heaven knows,

But for today they're happy

Just to wiggle all their toes.

Walk A Little Slower Daddy

I'm following in your footsteps

and I don't want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast,

Sometimes they're hard to see;

So walk a little slower, Daddy,

For you are leading me.

Someday when I'm all grown up,

You're what I want to be;

Then I will have a little child

Who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,

And know that I was true;

So, walk a little slower, Daddy,

For I must follow you.

We like the third one the best - we've done handprints this year, so it's footprints next time!

There used to be so many of my fingerprints to see

On furniture, and walls and things from grubby, sticky me.

But if you stop and think awhile, you'll see I'm growing fast

Those tiny handprints disappear, you can't bring back what's past

So here's a small reminder, to keep, not wash away

Of tiny hands, and how they looked

To make you smile one day

We've also done a double handprint, with Mum or Dad doing a print and then when it's dry, their child does one on top in a contrasting colour. I print "So put your little hand in mine and there's no hill or mountain we can't climb" underneath.
