Books To Take Home

hi

i have seen that many of you let the children pick a book to take home. i was wondering if you can explain more of how you go about doing this?

- types of books

- how you keep track of who has brought back etc

I have a big page a day diary and parents write their child's name and the name of the book they've borrowed. When they return the book they flip back in the diary to the page and tick the book off. They put the book in a box on the desk for us to flip through to check it's ok before it goes back into the book selection.

 

We have a mixture of board books, picture books, short stories, long stories, and non-fiction plus a few annuals

much the same as Cait, except we have library on a child's last session of the week, they choose the book for themselves and then adult writes the number of the book into our recording system, when the book is returned it is crossed off and the child can choose another. If the book goes missing or is damaged, generally our parents would replace it, I don't insist upon it however as I feel it is something I am willing to bear the cost of to offer the service. We have a complete range of books as does Cait, including books the children have made themselves with photos in of old outings we have been on, or special days which have taken place, events etc.

Hi we have table set up in our book area like a library, with a wide selection of books, we have an index card box with each child having their own card. An adult is present when the children choose a book and the title and date is noted on the card, children then put the books in their folders to take home at the end of the session.

Our children keep them for a week and then start the process again.

We also have a sheet for the children to draw, make comments plus a space for parents views these are then put in the children's journals.

Keep meaning to post one on here will do it this week when i return to work.

Have to say it has been a lovely idea to share and to have a link with home.

We have a 2 kinder boxes full of books, one full of all types for the children, and one full of development books, information sheets, advice, etc. for the parents.

 

Each child has a book bag (from Bookstart) and can freely choose books to take home as often as they like, to keep as long as they like, as can the parents.

 

We used to keep a record of the books that each child had - but stopped, because it took too long.

 

All the books that are available have been acquired from parent donations, charity shops, or from Puffin Book Club, so haven't actually cost much if anything, so we're not too worried if anything happens to them or if they don't get returned. Also, when our books from the book corner get a little 'used' then then go in the home box - (they're not all tatty ones though!)

 

Works really well for us, and the children like being able to choose.

Hi there.

We have been sharing books for about 10 years now and it is well worth the time and effort.

 

We make it a task the children do on a Friday if they attend on a Friday as do the majority of our children. For those not in on a Friday they choose a book on another day.

They choose a book any, from our nursery book collection that is out ( we change books around to reflect times of the year, ideas the children are interested in) a member of staff writes the book name in a A4 folder on the child's own page.

When they return it the following week it is crossed out and they choose another.

Books do not have to be at home for only a week. The children can keep them as long as they wish.

We did try doing book change twice a week but it is time consuming.

 

I would like to reorganize so parents chose books with children, maybe I will put it on my to do list!

Our parents do it with the children as often as they like, so it may be everyday. It doesn't take long and is just part of their arrival routine

we do it too, and stopped recording it as it was time consuming and as we had so many donated books. People are very good at returning them, and we let them change them whenever they bring them back at the start of the session.

 

They love borrowing the books and sharing them at home.
