sunnyday Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Perhaps we should start a new thread - 'Mum's favourite sayings'! One of my mums better ones was: 'The man who never made a mistake, never made anything.' sunnyday
MrsWeasley Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Perhaps we should start a new thread - 'Mum's favourite sayings'! One of my mums better ones was: 'The man who never made a mistake, never made anything.' sunnyday Advice To Give And 18 Year Old Mum started this one just before my 18th Birthday. Some lovely advice on there!
Cait Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Ok, so you got me puzzled - why 'cannot' rather than 'shall not'
MrsWeasley Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Ok, so you got me puzzled - why 'cannot' rather than 'shall not' I don't know, I didn't make it I just saw it on a website.
HappyMaz Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Ok, so you got me puzzled - why 'cannot' rather than 'shall not' I'm guessing you'd need to ask the person who designed the avatar, Cait!
sunnyday Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Advice To Give And 18 Year OldMum started this one just before my 18th Birthday. Some lovely advice on there! Ah - should have known it would already have been done! Thank you so much for directing me to it - really enjoyed reading all those very wise words. sunnyday
Cait Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 I'm guessing you'd need to ask the person who designed the avatar, Cait! Ah - it's just that I uploaded a picture to a thread yesterday and I thought she'd done some jigging of her own with it!
MrsWeasley Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Ah - it's just that I uploaded a picture to a thread yesterday and I thought she'd done some jigging of her own with it! Oh I didn't see that! I uploaded this one about a week ago!
Cait Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 My son left it as the desktop on this laptop when he gave it to me in the summer - just to make me smile when I switched it on! It certainly did too
HappyMaz Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Ah - it's just that I uploaded a picture to a thread yesterday and I thought she'd done some jigging of her own with it! Which thread was that then Cait - I must have missed that one!
Cait Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 er - can't remember - it was one which deteriorated into dregs like this one has - it was the 'you can't get past this' part of it that I uploaded it for - anyone else help out here? One of those days here I think
Guest Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Perhaps we should start a new thread - 'Mum's favourite sayings'! One of my mums better ones was: 'The man who never made a mistake, never made anything.' sunnyday Over 50 and I still remember this one said to me by my mum as I was on my way out to a local dance - started at 7.00 finished at 10.00 ah those were the days "Never trust a man who wears white socks" not sure why but I always look even now after 30 years of a happy marriage!!
Guest Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Shall not means that I will not allow you to pass. Cannot implies an inability, not necessarily because I won't let you! As with "Can I use your toilet?"-well I don't know can you? "May I use your toilet?"-of course you may!! Linda
Cait Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Yes, I know that - I was questioning what I thought was MrsWeasley's alteration to a picture I posted in a thread yesterday, and asking what her reasoning behind the change of words was.

Whereas actually MrsWeasley's avatar was changed before Cait uploaded her picture... so panic over! Maz
Guest Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Many apologies Cait-I misunderstood what you were meaning. Linda

Guest Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) Maybe I am getting old but.......... could somebody explain to me the first message?. I lost touch after the first 15 words. I am sure there should be some 'real words' and 'full stops' in there, somewhere! Shall I get my coat? Edited February 23, 2009 by Guest
Susan Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Its very confusing, isnt it? I hate text speak. We have a lovely language and we should use it!
Guest Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Hi Neil, Thanks for saying what probably lots of us were thinking but didn't say!!! The use and meaning of words seems to change on an almost daily basis and maybe we should set up a thread which can be updated regularly helping us to understand all these "tricky words" Nicky Sussex
Cait Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Maybe MrsWeasley could offer a translation service? She's no doubt up to date on the modern text idiom!

Cait Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Hehe - I think I got the gist of that one! How was your day today?
JacquieL Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Well I'm on an upward learning curve here with all this text-speak! We oldies feel rather challenged! Joking apart, we do have people on this forum who use different means to read posts, and not everyone is familiar with text speak. In the interests of inclusion please could we all use standard English and punctuation, so that we can get to grips with the issues and give support where needed.
