Guest Wolfie Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Has anyone come across any programmes that can be delivered at parent/child sessions that target either the issue of healthy eating, obesity, etc. or the importance of developing children's confidence and self-esteem? These two issues are ones that we have identified as priorities in our Centre development plan and we're currently looking around to see if there are any national programmes or guidelines that we could deliver or base some sessions on. Ideally we'd like something where parent and child attend together, or where a creche is provided for some of the session and for the other part we're all together. The only one I've come across so far is the Mini-Mend programme - is anyone doing that in their Centre?
Guest Wolfie Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Yep, looked at PEEP...and booked on their training course in the Spring! I'm very excited about that!
Guest Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 PLA did some stuff on Healthy eating but not sure whether it could be classed as an actual training programme. Are you looking for pre-written training or just info to devize your own training? The reason I ask is that training is so individual to the 'learning' group you are addressing it too. (Which I am sure you already know) Peggy
Guest Mrs Tiggy Winkle Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Yep, looked at PEEP...and booked on their training course in the Spring! I'm very excited about that! I think I'm going to that one too - in Oxford, March 11,12?? - See you there!
Guest Wolfie Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Oh yes, that's the one - see you there indeed!
HappyMaz Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Yep, looked at PEEP...and booked on their training course in the Spring! I'm very excited about that! Not least because there may be some FSF gatecrashers, eh Wolfie? Sorry I can't help - but I'd be interested to hear more when you get it sorted... Maz

Rea Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Surprised you're not there Wolfie. Two of mine are. Bless their little cotton socks. I know they'll come home dejected and swearing. Just seen the results so far. Ouch!

Guest Wolfie Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Oooh, no I haven't - it's the first I've heard of it! I've moved authorities recently so maybe that's why, I'll certainly look into it now though, thanks for that Mundia.
Guest Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 with reguard to healthy eating. we did a cooking workshop with our families. that was very popular
Guest Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Hi wolfie try tattybumpkin.com. Fab Fab Fab Kat -x-
Guest Wolfie Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Thanks for that - I'll have a look now!
Guest Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Well as we head off tomorrow for a crazy cupcake session with parents - not too sure that i am one to give any advice. We do a cook and Eat session over six weeks based on cooking from scratch over six weeks - very popular and enlightening... had parents who did not know how to weigh food, did not know what a courgette was etc etc Whilst having 100% attendance with really positive comments not too sure whether it would impact on the obesity targets, neither would my crazy cupcakes but it is very popular - got 30 parents and children booked on!! Not too sure how we are going to cope but we are making avocado and lemon cupcakes - that's my bit on healthy eating. I know that my authority do Mend but haven't as yet brought in Mini Mend - would be interested to see whether this works. Mend seems to be quite intensive as it should be but not sure how parents buy in to this as it is so time intensive and seems to work against the fact that parents do no want to spend time cooking/exercising - hence their children being over weight - difficult one to break so anyone who has undertaken mini mend would love to hear from you Nikki
Guest Wolfie Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 My last Centre has already completed a Mini-Mend course, I can PM you with details to put you in touch with them if you want?
Guest Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 We are currently four weeks into a six week 'Welly Walk and Winter Warmer' course. Parents and children all go out for a walk led by a trained walk leader, come back to the centre where the children go into a creche while the parents do some healthy cooking, then they all get together to eat and socialise. It's going very well so far. CCT
Cait Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Sounds like huge fun! I wish we had a cooker too!
Guest Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Has anyone come across any programmes that can be delivered at parent/child sessions that target either the issue of healthy eating, obesity, etc. or the importance of developing children's confidence and self-esteem? The only one I've come across so far is the Mini-Mend programme - is anyone doing that in their Centre? We have held several sessions in our children`s centre. We have brought in the food workers who are part of our local authority. They came into our centre to deliver healthy eating on a budget. We also put on a creche for the parents. If you need any more details I will be only too happy to help
Guest Wolfie Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Oooh, I've never heard of "food workers", they sounds like very useful people to be able to call on! What is their role and job description exactly?
Guest Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 what about food co-ops? we have them and community lunches on fridays.
