mps09 Posted December 14, 2011 Share Posted December 14, 2011 Well my question is just as the heading!! I HATE mixing up paint - and so bought lots of 5 litre bottles of ready mix - sheer bliss! However, we do have a very large stock still of powder paints and I just wondered if anyone knew how long it will last if I were to mix up a big batch and refill my 5 litre bottles..... Any ideas? There are groups I know that allow the children to mix their own paints, must be rather messy I suppose but hey if they can't do it with us who can they do it with. I'm assuming that as you have rather a lot of powder paint you really just want to use it up and get rid! How about allowing the children to experiment with it in your outside area, making sure they have wellies etc. on. They could have yoghurt pots and old teaspoons and maybe pump action water containers (old soap containers?). or lots of old wallpaper laid down outside and allow them to put little heaps of powder paint onto it and then let them loose with water squirty bottles and see what happens when the paints mix, give them some old paint rollers to use and paint big cardboard boxes. They could add powder to puddles they find outside, if you get any snow, ours loved squirting mixed up paints onto it last year. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Unfortunately I have found that if you try to keep powder paint it seperate and sets funny. It also cakes onto bottles/containers and dries up in a way that the ready mix stuff doesn't seem to. Jo A Posted December 15, 2011 Share Posted December 15, 2011 we use something called scola-cell some sort of cellulose that makes the paint last longer - but make sure you buy the anti-fungicidal type otherwise a nasty smell eminates from the container after a week! narnia Posted December 15, 2011 Share Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) It's the blue powder paint that stinks..........................think the yellow they use to mix it must contain sulphur?? anyway, to keep it mixed,Jo A is right, use some scola cell and mix enough paint podwer into it to get the consistency you want, it will keep as long as conventional ready mix then. If you simply mix the powder with water, it settles as the powder is heavier than water and it's no good then. Daughter....... keeps saying 'oh yeah - I must do that' and mutters something about 'I'll do it later' !!
