Multi-cultural Resources

Recommended Posts

I was at ASDA in Slough yesterday and spotted this whilst browsing in the toy department. Since we're looking for more multi-cultural resources in particular and dolls in particular, this leapt out at me. I was unimpressed when I saw it (and because of the noise levels I couldn't hear the doll speak when I pressed its feet), but I just did a quick search before bedtime and saw that they have four different models available to represent Asian, Oriental and European cultures. Apparently you can buy different language cartridges too, and from what I can see they are aimed at helping children learn different languages, or at the very least, hear their home languages spoken in the setting.

Here's the link to the website - they cost £29.99 online but were £20 as ASDA!

What do you think? Did I miss a bargain and a resource that would help support children's understanding of different faiths and cultures? Or do you think they're incredibly naff?

Would love to know what you all think!

why, for instance, do they all have lovely PINK lips???

I just looked at Yousuf the Muslim boy - his lips are orange! I also just noticed that the Muslim dolls can't have their language cartridges changed - they speak English and Arabic only.

they would appeal to the children but not provide you with your intended outcome, they all look the same apart from different coloured eyes and hair!! I think we 'eyfs forum' should make our own resources and sell them via this site!

If the intention is to teach the language I don't think they are much use.

They probably don't do much more than a tape to help a child by letting them hear their own language.

Could support their use of ICT?

Purely personal opinion but I have always been a bit biased against these toys with a hidden agenda.
