Chair of governor role

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have been a governor for about 4 years - as a teacher governor and then co-opted. We heard this week that our chair of governors is resigning from the role as she is moving a long way away!

I am contemplating putting my name forward for the role but am wary of whether I could manage the time commitment or whether it would work for me to be chair of governors given that I'm a teacher (I work full time). Our existing chair was in school a lot - but she worked part-time from home - and seemed to do a huge amount of research etc.

Do any of you have a role as chair of governors/know someone who does it and could give me an honest opinion of the role/responsibility etc?

Any input gratefully received!

Just a quick thought. Are you a teacher at the same school? If so is would that be considered a conflict of interests, is it allowed? I have served as a governor so am aware of the amount of time etc needed and how much the chair's role involved. Not sure that I would consider with a full time job but that's just thinking around my circumstances at this moment. Good luck!

Thanks for replying lsp. I was teacher at that school but am not working there any longer but am still a co-opted governor. So I don't have the conflict of interests. I think the chair has to be doing the head teacher's performance management which he may find weird and I certainly would! My concern at the moment is that I don't think there is anyone else at the moment who could/would do the role and we are due Ofsted any day!
