secure at 30-50 developing in to next range. We aim to ensure all children are secure at or above at the 30-50 month age band before they start school.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do if a child is aged over 50 months? We have a small number of children who are early September birthdays and as we are open all year they will practically be 60 months when they leave us to start school. Would you still be happy for them to be secure in 30-50 and emerging into 40-60? we find some of the statements in 40-60 very hard to get observations on and they can be worded quite complicated, at meetings where foundation stage teachers have been present, they have told us that those are the statements they aim for by the end of their year. Are we trying to push children too far?

Don't forget it is 40 to 60 plus months so a child has a lot of room to achieve the skills.

Achievement of skills assessed will always require teaching of said skills so regardless of how old a child is if they haven't been taught the requisite skills they won't be at that stage - if you have taught the reading skills for example a nearly 5 yr old could well be at a developing or securing 40 - 60 plus stage of development when they leave for school. The pitch of the expectation for the skills level is also crucial to understand.
