Playing alongside other children who are engaged in the same theme

Hi,

What would you be looking for, for this statement?

We had 2 girls - one was being a vampire and one was being a witch in our Witches Den and at times they were playing together not just alongside?

I would be looking for children who are playing with the same resource but not interacting or 'playing together' but tolerating that someone else is in the same space, using the same resources ?

yes - I would too - playing at same resource eg trains - each engaged at the activity but not aware of/interacting with any other children at the same activity.

This one confuses me as it's in EAD 40-60 months but the exception within PSE is much higher. Most of the children in my Nursery class can do this but I wouldn't put them at 40-60 months Being Imaginative. As it is in EAD, I was wondering if there was something else to be looking for.

maybe there is..I know there are a few I'd like to move to a different age band...and why are all the SSM 30-50m statements shape based (apart from 1 positional) ?

I could have a field day reorganising statements. So many are unclear, or in the wrong age group. At the end of the day, that's why we have to use professional judgement, and not use it as a tick list..

Indeed. It is the educational programmes which should guide us, which have all the aspects of learning running throughout especially in mathematics as DM doesn't provide any assessment statements for some aspects We should still be aware of the stages beyond as the skills will be there at a later point, especially in the ELG which is the only statutory part!!

 

However DM bands taken as a whole are useful. We do need to remember that 40 months is a 3 yr old and 60plus months is a 5 yr old to nearly 6 though so the range of descriptors of behaviours in a band may cover a range of varying responses!

 

For the 40 - 60 statement in EAD, I think this would infer that children are able to engage in an imaginative idea, so they are able to enter into an imaginary or expressive/creative world. This may be in any of the contexts described in the educational programme don't forget, so may not just be role play, but could be music making or dance for example.
