Starting Points

At a recent Ofsted seminar, we were encouraged to implement Starting Points assessments. What do others do in their setting? About to take over as supervisor rather suddenly and need some help!! Thank you.

We observe the child's abilities in relation to certain things and communicate this in writing to their parents, when we feel that the child is sufficiently settled for us to get an accurate picture of who they are and what they can do.

At the end of each term, parents get a list of the progress the child has had during the term. Before leaving, we put together a summary which basically consists of the starting points plus the progress for each term added together.

We give parents an All about me sheet to fill in, to collect their interest at present. Do a First day at pre-school page, take photo's and make a note of how they have settled, activities played with. Then we observe over a couple of weeks and make notes. Look through the development grids to access where they are and use this information to fill in the Initial/Starting Points form which I have uploaded.

Hope that all makes sense!

We are a sessional pre-school and complete a pre-start profile with parents using the EYFS and the prime areas of learning if under 3 and all areas if over. We then use obs to support profile - often find that children drop a little until they are truly settled with us. Does work very well though! Takes 15 - 20 mins to complete which I appreciate is perhaps too long for some!
