Guest Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Does anyone have a list of appropriate questions specific to parents of children with EAL? I give parents (of all children) forms to complete prior to their child starting nursery - 'All about me' and 'All about my child'. I am revamping them for the new term and would like to add something specific to children with EAL. Does anyone do anything similar and, if so, what questions do you ask? Many thanks! x Quote
Wildflowers Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 I would ask them for words in their language which would be helpful to know and about the child's practical and emotional needs, interests and fears etc - the things he/she would want you to know but may not be able to say. Quote
mollypiper Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 The same as wildflowers - definitely need to know mum etc in case they are asking for parents, toilet, eat, drink etc. We get them to write it down and then we do it phonetically how it sounds to us Quote
finleysmaid Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Although i do ask questions i dont change the paperwork for them as i think it should cover all bases for all people. I do ask which of the things they can do in their home language and which in English and make a note of this. I tend to assess in home language for the basis of prime areas and english for specific areas. We also have translation lists (i also use babel to learn a few myself) We also use makaton to help and other children to translate if we get really stuck!!! (or staff if we know the langage) plus visual clues to back up. Quote
