a quick question - we take photos which we use for observation / assesment , these are included in the LJ alongside a brief written obs -describing what was happening etc etc. do we stick these photos into the childs LJ and complete the written obs or do we involve the children and get them to stick them in and and then to tell us about what was happening in the picture etc ?

this is for playgroup aged children.

we do it both ways Rolymo. We need to get the children to feel ownership of the LJs we also ask parents to send in photos etc. for them too. Its very much a collaborative effort. They build into a fabulous record by the time they leave. The lJs are kept at the pre-school, so they are always acssessible, it's amazing how often the children like to look through them and show their friends their photos, and they love adding new ones and recall what was happening, we write this in alongside an observation we have made.

I would think it could depend on the child themselves. Sometimes we end up sticking the pictures in ourselves - simply because the picture is printed out but the child isn't there, and rather than lose it or risk it getting spoilt we stick it in. We always have a discussion about what was going on and we write that in, and we get reminiscences too when re-viewing the picture, perhaps with another adult later on, and these comments get added and dated. "I remember doing that - it was fun when Mrs XXX got soaked with the water - we were looking to see if the umbrella was waterproof, and it was, wasn't it!"

If there's several similar pictures, children choose the ones they want to stick in
