Toast Time!

Hi,

 

I'm getting observed on Friday morning which is when we make toast each week. There is one TA at the table who supervises and handles the toaster. The children use tongs to take their toast out once it has popped and are encouraged to spread their own butter and jam on their slice of toast. They are then encouraged to cut the toast themselves before taking it to another table to eat. I'm just wondering if there's anything else I could add to enhance this activity. I have printed out cards with pictures of the stages of making toast so the children can order these while they're waiting or after they've had their toast. The TA obviously talks to the children about safety e.g. why we use the tongs. And they are practising the physical skills of spreading and cutting. Is there anything I'm missing?! It's a mixed Nursery and Reception class.

You seem to have covered the physical skills. How about offering a choice of spreads eg cheese and marmite to encourage the children to talk about their likes and dislikes.

They could compare the bread and toast and see if they can tell you how the bread has changed in the cooking process.

Toast can be cut into two and four triangles and two or four (or more!) rectangles.

how do they know who's turn it is? can they count how many pieces they need and how many they have use and how many left?????

could they make the bread the day before????? you can create in 3d with toothpicks and toast!!!

What do they need to learn...can you fit this in to their toast session...so if they need to write can they write on their plate or make a name label to put on the list ....if they need to improve maths then the counting ideas might work...or if they need more K+U can you do something about how bread is made or crops are grown.??

We use toast and margarine to generate discussion about changes and melting.

 

You can write/draw on bread using food colouring and a thin paintbrush if you want to do literacy link, before you put it in the toaster.

 

How do you differentiate?

Thanks for all of the ideas! I will make a form for the children to write their name on when they go to make their toast, to keep track of who has had it and to generate literacy / maths discussion. Will also ask TA to encourage talk about why the butter changes when they put it on the toast. I think I'm worrying about it too much as this is only one small part of what my head teacher will be looking at! Just wanted to make sure I've got as much covered as I can!
