  1. We did tie -dye 2 weeks ago as part of out cultre week, Dylon do packs that have squeezie bottle ( a bit like hair die) that you can place directly onto the material. Children brought in their own shirts.....it worked out really well. One pack did two reception classes. ( We had loads left over too)

I've also tried using red cabbage & beetroot water to dye wool, it was ok but not as good.

  2. in a thread about writing boxes a few days ago there were a few good spy ideas......we've also made newspapers from flipchart paper & cut holes into so the kids can spy on each other.

Some children in my class used the junk box modelling to make secret spy cameras so that when we were out of the classroom we’d know if anyone had been in.... We’ve had budding spies in our class since day one….the kids are really good at keeping this going & we are happy to help extend it.

  3. mixing bicarbonate of soda & water & then heating works well.

1 teaspoon soda & 2 tablespoons water, paint on water & back for 10 mina or so.......my book suggests making a map & marking a secret route.

Using papter that's been painted with tea & dired & then painting with lemon juice makes a good contrast.

    Hope you have fun

  4. HI Guys

Rather than just getting on with my dissertation I've had to do a 10 weeks module on practitioner research & two assignments including an in depth dissertation proposal.... just wondered did anyone else do this for the BA Ed?

If so what did you include?

    Thanks Nicky

  5. Hi

I'm not sure if this will interest you?.....but I've been coordinating the International School Award at our school. We have had a link with a school in India for over a year & worked on lots of joint projects together, sent letters & emails & in the processes learnt lots about each others cultures. We've recently linked with two African schools, (one is a orphanage) & plan to do the same type off work.

Linking with schools around the world in this way has been a great way to introduce new cultures, shared ideas with each other & challenge misconceptions that we may hold about each other. (e.g. children in Indian use blackboards & chalk for their lessons, in fact our link schools ict facilities are much better than ours)

Hope this info is ok, I think it's fine to sponsor child but I think this type of partnership can be off great value.

The link is for the British Council global gateway....they are great at offering advice & support. http://www.globalgateway.org.uk/

Hope it all goes well, Nicky XXX

  6. We are doing health & growth too, I began to make our 'healthy heart cafe', lots of hearts & themed writing frame to make menus & take orders.....I think I may need to extend it though as not too many of my boys are overwhelmed with the hearts :o I've just got out my Lazy Town Superhero Foods book & was thinking of turning it into a cafe for superheroes....I'll see what the kids think?

I've got lots of things planned for outside in the garden, (when the some lets up) including the TEE PEE idea that was posted on the forum. Ohhh & lots more.

Story focus is Dr.Dog, he's soooo funny xD

Hope you guys are having fun.

  7. ohhh, I think I'll have to give that I go....we've used tights to print onto & then wrapped the tights around wire coat hangers to make giant flowers in the garden.

Have you used balls & biscuit tins? Dip the ball in paint & then roll around a lined biscuit tin?

Our kids loved using the turkey basters I brought to paint on large pieces of paper. Water & food colouring work well with that one.

We have a selection of shoes that the kids can use to walk/paint in.....can't think off anything else at the mo....

Ohh & they seem to like adding things too the paint & using hands, ie sand, glitter etc...

  8. Have you used the book, come to tea on planet zum zee? (by Tony Mitton and Guy Parker-Rees)

It's a good book to use if your topic is around an alien tea party, there are magical hovering pizzas in the story so we made pizza, there are musical cookies in there too, we made domino biscuits (some good PSNR out of that activity). We made rockets with loo rolls & balloons, we made jellies. We also hosted a tea party for a visiting alien. I dressed up in my husbands painting overalls & put a mini mouse dress over the top & brought some brightly coloured iced cupcakes. The kids loved it.

The children & I built a rocket with lots of boxes, bottle top buttons foil & glitter. The came up with lots of ideas for inside like a loo, bath, food & water etc.... this was good as we were looking at health & growth at the time. I hung Christmas lights in the role play & covered the rest of it in black cloth to try to make it look like space. We all then boarded the rocket & did the count down & up's. The children loved having the 'captains log', to fill out.

  9. Hi

I have two dogs, Toby is 14 & Max is 13, as you can tell we had them a year apart. Apart from keeping them apart and giving the supervised play when Max was a tiny pup, we didn't have any problems. I had them when I was at college so when I started working & I could'nt always get back to them I knew they had each other for company.

    Hope all goes well.

  10. Hi

Sorry don't know how to do the quote thing...doh!!

I've got a friend making me some bum bags/handbags for writing.

Karina I think it was you that mentioned a Spy Box.....I have a group of girls in my reception class that are really into being spy’s, We've made newspapers with eye holes so the peek through them. I provide flip chart paper for this. A parent also send in fax rolls, the kids love using this for map-making because of the carbon print.

I provide kitchen sponge & some paint & the children take the fingerprints of their friends just as a policeman would. If it gets too messy I put out oil & sugar paper

I'm also going to try 'fingerprint lift off', The detective uses chalk dust & a paint brush to brush over a finger print on a surface, once they've lifted of the print they added it to a police record card & fill in details like, location, name, crime & suspect.

A mix of bicarbonate of soda & water make invisible ink, the kids can make marks, when baked/heated the marks show up.

Also tea painted paper & lemon juice make a nice alternative.

I too made journalist brief cases, this turned into a big child initiated role play, the kids made a giant TV & remote control, (that they could sit in) we had news readers, using a laptop & shuffling & making notes on paper, we had a weather map that the kids marked, we had a runner that fetch the tea & coffee etc, he had a note book to take orders, hair & make up made lists. The kids then recorded their news broadcast on our camera.

sorry I've gone on a bit, hope that this is off use.

  11. Hi

We have a cafe style snack time, with one member of staff, the children have their name on a lable (peice of fruit). They move the lable from one side of the wall to the other once they have been to the 'cafe'. It works well, we also use a market stall role play with a till so the children can pay of their drinks & fruit.

  12. Hi

You could try the book Aliens love underpants…my boys loved it. Sparklbox (if you can still use it) has lots of funny underpants templates, I printed them out and put numbers on them. The children loved pegging them on the washing line.

I’ve also used socks for counting in 2’s. I know it’s not completely cloths but it fits.

    Have fun Nicky.
