Well mine is showing minus 1 new messages.

 

Does that mean someones not talking to me????

ooh er, I hadn't even noticed that part of the tool bar! I had 2 (rather old) messages!!

If you want some friends then I'm afraid you'll have to add people yourself! Looks like Sue is willing and I'm happy to be anyone's friends too.
