Water/seaside Topic

We have a 2 year planning cycle which includes the topic of water before 1/2 term then the seaside on the last 1/2 term before the summer. When we did this topic the last time i was a lickkle NQT who was on supply in the school (where i am now permanent) and was not confident enough to say that i was not a big fan of the activities. Anybody got any ideas of what i can do? to make it more interesting for the kids and me???

Thank U

Sarah

Hi Sarah

We have done a topic of under the water and on the beach in the past. I will have to find my topic planner for this at work tomorrow and will post tomorrow evening with some ideas.

Have a look at my reply to nursery drama in another thread re Seaside

Have you got a sea centre or aquarium you can visit. That would give you a good starting point. Nemo is very popular at the moment so that could be another way into water.

Set up an underwater role-play. Another idea is an Island. There is a super book 'Tom and the Island of the Dinosaurs' which has worked well with Reception. We had a boat, a hot air balloon, fishing, flippers and snorkels, messages in bottles, treasure maps and the like. We made telescope pictures using things we could see beginning with a given letter of the alphabet. We read stories about Pirates. this could lead on to the seaside part of your topic. Make boats. Use guttering, tubes abd funnels outside.

Sand and water wont be a problem. We designed fish with patterns and sorted them into sets depending on colour shape, size etc.

Make jelly and ice-lollies. Add ice cubes to the water tray. Talk about water and healthy living. Get the HV in to talk about keeping clean.

anyway i know lots of other people will come up with wonderful ideas. This site is great.

I now have a super collection of shell I have found at jumble sales and charity shops all though I would not buy them from shops as so many are collected from the wild with an impact on the species. The children love counting, grading and touching them we make rubbings of some of them and do some observational drawings of them. We also have picnic baskets for role play. The Rainbow fish story is good for PESD There is a good Rosie and Jim Safety near the water video. I make books, lotto games, pairs with pictures from clip art. Look at different types of boats - row boats, sail boats, power boats paddle boats sort and classify them. Make a magnetic fishing game with colours or numbers or shapes.

The importance of washing for hygiene? - washing the plates etc in the home corner - get the children to clean all the grubby plates etc. My class love washing up after cooking activities _ especially the boys (the new man lives in reception classes :D ), washing the dolls clothes/dressing up clothes - great maths activities counting how many things on the line, putting things into sets, colour work, if washing socks - pairs, motor skills pegging items on the line to dry.

Depending on the age/ability of your children - magnetic fishing for letters - can fish for and say initial letter or fish for 3 letters (better if they are on different colours - consonants on one colour vowels on another - can they make a cvc word with the letters they "catch".

Probably obvious ones - but....

JacquieL - where can I find your nursery drama link?? I agree - this site is a life saver :o

A favourite story for me is "The LIghthouse Keepers Lunch" children made a superb display. The lighthouse keepers wife was in the house on the cliff and she sent his lunch down a basket hanging on a wire. Of course it didnt reach him as the seagulls ate it. We had a lighthouse with flashing light, seagulls flying here there and everywhere, built the cliff and the house and of course the wire with basket of food on! Don't know if this is of any help!!

Dont want to hijack the thread but does anyone else dislike the Rainbow fish - or is it one of those universally loved books?

Im asking because it is often cited as a perfect PSED story which lends itself to lots of activities - and a lovely display to boot.( One at a school I visit has been up for nearly a year and is being moved -but not taken down - since everyone loves it so)

But when I read it to my own children they hated it. When I asked why they said that it was horrible of the other fish to bully the Rainbow fish out of his lovely scales. Why SHOULD he have to part with them to fit in?

And at the end he was left with only 1 scale... poor rainbow fish :o

Anyone else see it this way?

I must admit it is not a favourite story of mine, but I do use it and yes it makes a wonderful display. What are your views about Little Red Hen - mean old chicken who won't share her bread. There is also Goldilocks who is involved in breaking and entering, theft, and criminal damage. WHAT about poor ginger bread boy chased by cannibalistic old people? Should we be reading any of these stories?????

Yes the characters in some tales and rhymes aren't very good role models. When I am reading these tales I often adapt using my own words good job my children can't read yet. Someone knitted me 3 wooly mice for 3 blind mice. We don't do that rhyme I think its horrible.

I hate 3 blind mice!!! We never sing it! It is just one of those nursery rhymes that makes me cringe! I must say that a lot of nursery rhymes and the old traditional tales are pretty gruesome.

I've not really thought about the rainbow fish that way. Its not a favourite of mine anyway-but I can see what you mean!

To get back to the sea and water theme-a really lovely book for older children, 4 + is Coral goes swimming. She is in her paddling pool one day and finds herself on an adventure swimming around the world.

Hi

we are doing water this term too!!!

We are taking children accompanied by parents of course on a 20 minute boat trip down the Thames. Have done this before and it was a great success - usully follow it with a picnic - weather depending. :D

'Come away from the Water Shirley' by John Burningham is one of my favourites - great for discussing differences between pictures and words, the importance of the pictures to the story etc (& it's a great story!)

Hi

The May issue of EYE magazine has "Water, a special project" Five pages of ideas and a lovely poster (well if you like posters! but I am not a poster fan!!) with suggestions on the back.

Just thought it may be of interest to those 'doing' water this term

Errm!! Just one of my foibles if you like! I know nowadays many of them are lovely and very informative I just think anyone can "stick a poster on the wall" no real thought required just get the blue tac out!

It may stem from my training days at a residential college. We had a residential childrens nursery and students (under supervision) were responsible on a one to one basis for children in residence. Each child had its own room with a student bed too. It was the students responsibility to prepare the room for the child. All rooms were painted neutral colours and we had to 'decorate' relevant to the age of the child ( anywhere between 10 days and 7 years)

The college principal continually said "that doesnt mean sticking a poster on the wall I want something more imaginative" if I had a pound for every time I heard it I would be very rich!!

we tend to make our own I suppose - we have a lovely one up at the moemnt on the lifecycle of frog. Beautiful photographs of frogspawn and the various stages and ending with Mr Frog - these are mounted on card with our written description underneath.

That's a fair point. I like to have a range of things on display including posters, photographs and childrens work. I always try and change them regularly as well. The hall we meet in is large and unwelcoming with nothing on the wall, so my mission is to fill it up with colour! But don't say it's easy to put a poster on the wall - mine never stay up!! The hall gets so cold and damp at night that when I arrive the next session my posters are all over the floor and I have to go round sticking them all up again. Just discovered that white tack seems to work better though. This is a huge breakthrough!! :D

Link to comment

Oooh! I didnt realise white tac was any different other than the colour! Will have to invest in some!

I have to confess to chopping posters up though!!! Some have such fantastic pictures, photographs etc. The water one is eye mag, this month is lovely. Lots of circles with different pics such as rain clouds, waterfalls, river etc. The circles are on a background of the sea so I will cut the cirlces out and keep them to use at some point. Not wishing to start a poster debate :D I perhaps just dont use them in their original form.

I now have a vision of you running round the church hall with your white tac :D

Hi

At least your allowed to keep your posters up overnight we have to remove everything (even the last piece of blutac from the walls) before we leave.

I know posters are not the best but they are colourful and quick to make the hall more child freindly, and colourful. :D

The nursery i work at is in a seaside town and the children are doing a topic on the seaside at the end of term. We are making the home corner into a beach and making a ice cream stand out of boxes and using plastic ice creams to sell.

We will also visit the beach and the lifeboat station. :D

Hi there,

You could turn your role play area into a beach/undersea adventure. Decorate the walls with blue wavy strips to represent the water waves, cut out/make fishes, octopus, star fish, crabs etc for the walls or to hang down from the ceiling in the role play area. It depends on how large the area is. Half of the area could be the beach with a bench and table parasol, barbecue, swimming costumes, sun glasses, etc. You could use a large yellow mat to highlight the sand area. Then make a divide for the sea using a blue mat or even carpet. on the edge of the sea bed place water googles, flippers, anything used for swimming. Use a large tray with lots of sea creatures in it for the children to investigate.

Oh... my pupils love the Rainbow Fish! Why? Because they identify themselves with it.

They know they are not perfect and that sometimes they might be selfish not wanting to share a toy or something else, or even wanting to play only with a certain friend and not all of the group. Slowly these are the ones that end up having less friends! I had that experience with a child last year and the story helped her a lot.

Rainbow Fish does listen to the recommendation of the starfish of going to visit the wise octopus. It was open to help. It wasn't easy, as it is not easy in real life. At the end, it discovers the joy of loving and being loved by others for whom it was and not for it's external 'beauty', for being the 'best' or 'most beautiful'.

The children also learn about life under the sea :) .

Yes :o a bit long. Anyway, I forgot to say that Nursery Education (Scholastics) has two editions related to the topic: Under the Sea (April 2003) and The Seaside (May 2001). I think there is another one titled "Water", but I am not sure. They have nice activities and they are linked to the SS/ELG, which is even better.

Have a nice week :) !

Severn Trent water have a water wizard on their website. They also have resources available to do with the water cycle.

I have always found ice a good science topic to cover when doing water. I like to freeze objects inside ice cubes and make primary colour oce cubes which change the water tray into wonderful colours as they melt and combine. e.g blue and red ice cubes make purple water! I also planned a whole role play area around the artic which was fascinating fo rthe children.

Sue,

Have just been reading with interest all the replies regarding the seaside topic. This is our new topic after half term and really like the pirate ideas. Could I please also have the words to the pirate song?

Thanks, Steph
