catma Posted October 26, 2019 Posted October 26, 2019 (edited) https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/early-years-foundation-stage-reforms Whatever part of the EYFS you work in and whichever age range you work with, this consultation is important. Much of this is based on a pilot with a handful of schools this summer. You may not feel that the ELGs matter, if you are working in a nursery but believe me, they do. They are the expectation against which your work is and will be measured. Your part in the child's journey, towards those goals, is what is looked at by Ofsted in particular. The proposals around moderation and the EYFSP are a dilution of that assessment, in favour of the baseline. Further informed information is here https://www.early-education.org.uk/news/early-education-issues-detailed-response-draft-elgs and here https://www.early-education.org.uk/press-release/early-years-coalition-response-government-eyfs-consultation with reference to the Early Education/coalition of EYFS groups document here https://www.early-education.org.uk/getting_it_right_in_the_eyfs Please will you take some time to look at this important consultation. BenTapestrySupport Posted October 28, 2019 Posted October 28, 2019 Thanks for sharing this. As you say, it is such an important time for the future on assessment in Early Years so well worth having your say whilst you can!
mundia Posted October 29, 2019 Posted October 29, 2019 I completely echo what catma said. The consultation is live until January. If you have a view, have a voice. Read the proposed ELGS. What comes before it will change too. Use this thread to share your thoughts. I'll start with one of my (many) concerns..removing the ELG for shape space and measure, which suggests it's not very important, but replacing it with two that relate to number. Over to you, what do you think? 2

Jules Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Thank you Catma for starting a conversation to highlight the consultation process for the revised ELGs. I'll be putting links to this in the November FSF newsletter and on the front page of the FSF too. This affects everyone in early years and is an opportunity for all of us to give our thoughts to this process.
Helen Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 My main worry is that if it's not assessed, it won't be covered. Dumbing down the entire reception year into a few ELGs will, I fear, narrow the curriculum and reduce the inspiring, stimulating learning opportunities our young children need. The issue of whether or not to create a replacement for the Development Matters document is also hugely significant. Teachers seem to want one, yet feel overwhelmed with the amount of unnecessary tick boxy assessment it encourages. How can we make sure children receive a rich learning experience without the need to assess everything?
mundia Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Just flagging this up again in case youve forgotton. It is so important to repond to this consutlation. If you dont think new ELGS will affect you, yes they will. They will impact on what goes before, what will be covered by the 'new' development matters (or whatever it will be called) Early Education have updated their response question by question https://www.early-education.org.uk/news/read-early-educations-draft-response-consultation-revised-eyfs Tactyc have also done so via their twitter post https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1215673908751405058 There are lots of other responses in nursery wortld but I think you might have to be a member to access some of them. The reserach review of the evidence is in the link above from Catma. The consutlation ends on 31st January If you have a view, have a voice. 1
finleysmaid Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Thanks for the nudge Mundia...again i feel concerned that my children with EAL and SEND are going to struggle with this prescriptive curriculum ....i continually ask myself WHY Britain has gone down this route when all other highly educated countries lead a play based curriculum unitl 6/7 and do SO much better than our poor children who are forced to 'learn' in a retricted way from the age of 2 2
BenTapestrySupport Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 We've also recorded our thoughts here at The FSF: https://fsf-podcasts.simplecast.com/episodes/response-to-the-eyfs-consultation
