Staff Mentoring

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi, Im after some advice on the whole appraisals, supervision and mentoring tasks. Currently we do appraisals once a year, we are doing supervisions every month at the moment after negative feedback from ofsted. I was also told that some staff need mentoring. How do others show that mentoring has taken place- is it just from the supervisions or has somebody got a template they use to show how, when and why the staff members has been mentored.

Many Thanks

We use a mixture of supervision and separate mentoring in the room. The supervisions are by Line Manager and the mentoring is by room leader. Targets are set in supervision and recorded; they are communicated to room leader and a list of actions/support required typed up. The record of mentoring is in a simple exercise book (similar to school books) which is like a diary, mentors and mentees just write a sentence/paragraph or two once or twice a week to record when they have been shown something or been observed etc. or any concerns they have, things they need more practice in or things they have learned. Book is taken to supervision and target sheet updated. Works really well.

We do ours once every half term, so 6 weekly and works really well. Ofsted liked it and the staff all say it is a chance to discuss things and to hear how they are performing, so they really like them. It helps me keep up to date with everything and we also go through a learning journey in detail together, which again supports the staff in their work.
