Ratatat
OMG. Every day another blow aimed directly at Education. What the hell is he doing and why? This man and his cronies need to get a reality check and take a look at the damage they are doing to this country's children.
Rea
I know what he's doing. He's dismantling the state education system. He's being very clever about it too. He speaks very convincingly to the public, who dont necessarily know how education works, about the changes he has planned. He allows those plans to be seen to be without foundation which in turn will cause disruption and chaos. He will be able in the future to fall back on his soundbites which in no way show the chaos was intended by his department but must instead be the fault of the many advisors who failed him. In the meantime, he brings in big business, hedge funds are what led to the failure of the banks, so theres only one way the education system can go. That also wont be his fault, because we all know how badly the banks look after money and institutions. Mr Gove is a twit, but a very clever one. catma
This would still mean schools would have to educate for 190 days though so the same amount of non educating time would exist. Shorter summer means the days go elsewhere, and to be honest the idea of 6 term years with 2 week breaks dotted around has been mooted before and often. Maintained church schools can already set their own dates, which causes confusion for us around Easter as our Catholic schools seem to always want Easter w/e in the middle of the holiday, regardless of what the rest of the LA is doing! I think this is just sabre rattling while other things go on behind it. The real issue would be if he deregulates the length of the school year. That would mean that schools could remove any holidays they wanted. Then this would be a removal of the teachers pay and conditions, meaning teachers would work longer annually for the same salary. Couple this with the deregulation of the teachers pay structure this year so that pay progression is no longer automatically annual and the overall academy effect on conditions of service and all the things our unions have fought so hard for re conditions (1990s annualised directed time campaign anyone??)will be removed in one fell swoop. Guest
profit making schools would end up being selective so the people that have would be well catered for and the have not's would be left in the poorly treated and beaten up state system. To hell with it lets send the kids back down the mines and up chimneys as this gentleman sees that era as our education model..
