Reports linked to new EYFS and characteristics of learning

Hi, I am new to the forum ... Am thinking at present about end of year reports and how this ties in with DM, characteristics of learning etc. It would be helpful if someone would let me have a look at a report...am still unsure about characteristics of learning as these happen naturally when chn are exploring and playing especially during child initiated activities

Hi ireland and welcome to the forum. Sorry there haven't been any replies yet!

Are these reports for all your children, or just those going onto school?

Many settings have sections for the 3 prime areas and/or 4 specific areas of learning, and then one extra section to cover the CoL, using the bits in the dev matters book to help focus your comments.

Thanks for your reply Helen, in answer to your question, yes it is for the end of year reports for 30 chn. Sorry maybe I should have said I am in reception. What you suggested sounds like what we do at present. It is a lot of work, I was hoping to cut this down at bit.

Thanks for your reply Helen

Hi,

I am feeling the same Ireland. I was hoping someone out there may have designed a report for parents for academic reports including the characteristics of effective learning within. Unfortunately, it looks like we will be writing 30 reports under each area of learning then where the general comments section would be include comments on the childs demonstration of effective learning. The fact we have to write a report for year 1 teachers too seems like alot of work, if it's already been included in the report, it'll just be a copy and paste job for year 1.

Sorry not in reception, but why can't yr1 teacher have a copy of parent year end report rather than do again ? Haven't seen a county transition sheet for transition to school yet either.

Hi,

I have taken the report format from the assessment and reporting guidelines handbook. I am reporting in detail on the 3 characteristics and then providing parents with a summary of whether they are emerging, expected or secure at ELG.

sample attached for you

hope it helps

Is anyone willing to share some of the comments they are going to write for the characteristics of learning? I am the reception teacher in a small independent school and completely at sea about this..

Thanks - this is a good framework to start my reporting from

I went on a training course recently where we looked at this and had to work together to write a sample statement. Really it came down to the kind of thing I've always written for a 'General' comment on my reports. Sentences like: Billy is friendly and outgoing, confident to participate in a wide range of activities. He is willing to share his ideas and try new approaches to solving problems and developing a project. He concentrates well on a task; coping with and moving on from difficulties he experiences and delights in sharing his successes with adults and children throughout the school.

It was suggested that we write a paragraph or two that talked about all three CoEL rather than a separate paragraph or statement for each one. I haven't started mine yet but that idea works for me.

I had a go at writing them for the teacher who was returning from mat leave who I'd been covering for. This is what I did really as I found I was stopping myself saying something under one characteristic so as to be able to put it under another otherwise.

Hi all, first visit to the forum. Hope to help by saying in our reception class they are sending reports to parents and yr1 teacher that tick emerging, expected or exceeding in each of the 17 areas as shoen in profile handbook. Then including a brief comment on each of the 3 areas of characteristics of effective learning.
