Phonic Assessment For Year 1

I really don't understand the point of the phonic reading test in Year 1. Reading nonsense words without any context or purpose - why?! Shouldn't reading be about enjoying books and stories with adults encouraging the higher level skills of comprehension, prediction, inference etc not just decoding words/barking at print. Although phonics is important surely it is just one strategy for reading - over emphasis on phonics takes away the joy of reading and can hold back the majority of more able sight word readers. Also, how many of us as adults learnt to read perfectly fluently without ever knowing what a vowel digraph was?!

Haha - this is just my personal opinion and I know it is contentious but thought I would see what other people thought!

I'm sorry you have such a stressful time ahead of you - hope it goes ok.
