Guest Wolfie Posted June 3, 2008 Share Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) Time to let off steam.... I was called up for Jury Service, starting yesterday. I got myself all geared up for it, brought work home that I could sit and do at the courts, blocked two weeks out of my work diary, etc. etc......and now nothing has happened and I haven't been needed yet!! I knew this was likely to happen, having listened to other people who have sat around for two weeks, but it's SOOOO frustrating! I can't settle to anything because I don't know what I'm going to be doing each day until it comes! My head's all over the place, it's awful! At least the court don't make you sit around once they know they don't want you for the rest of the day, so I've come home and worked...and got a lot more done here on my own than if I'd sat at my desk doing the same stuff at work....but it's a strange existence! I had jury service a few years ago on the 2nd or 3rd week of the reception children being in school - really really bad timing. I asked my head if I could ask for it to be postponed for sensible work reasons and she said not to worry, but it was really horrible leaving someone else to settle in my new class while I sat twiddling my thumbs, waiting to find out if I would be called up that day. I ended up being on 2 cases, ,and it was really interesting. Neither of them got to the point where we had to reach a verdict - one changed to a guilty plea after a few days' trial and with the other some strange stuff happened that meant after a few days' trial they discovered the case couldn't continue. Hope you get on an interesting case soon - and in the meantime, make the most of being able to get some extra bits of work done at home or even, dare I say it, take the chance to have a bit of a break and a relax! My husband was called a couple of years ago and just a few days before he was due to start he was contacted and told they had overbooked jurors so he wasnt required after all! Ive done a stint too. Sue R Posted June 3, 2008 Share Posted June 3, 2008 My husband has been 'called' twice, the first time was over Christmas/New Year - he was not on a jury and they were sent away mid first week and 'let off' as nothing was happeneing!! The next time, he was on a couple of cases (both interesting, he told me later), but in both instances he lost a LOT of money, as the 'allowance' wasn't a fraction of his earnings, which he lost. Ummm pondering though I wonder if certain groups of the population i.e. someone who is proundly deaf or blind would have to attend a court case. It would be interesting to find out.
