My all time favourite for development norms is Mary Sheridan - Birth to Five Years. It's a long time since I've studied so not sure if there are any other recommended reads, other known theorists tend to specialise in specific developmental areas.

You won't regret it Hannahgurney. :o , My other favourites are Margaret Donaldson and Tina Bruce, maybe you could hint to family and friends how useful these would be as Chrissy pressies. I have often referred to mine many times over the years.
