Hi -
We've had a couple of requests for general advice from practitioners who have children with Downs Syndrome in their class this year.

this topic is just a request for any practitioners with experience and advice to offer it here! :D

I Hope you dont mind me adding some information. I am not a teacher and I have no special needs training but whilst studying I have found a web sight that gives a lot of information for teachers of down's syndrome children.

the literature is downloadable (is that a real word) I have printed it into a booklet for my own use but the education support pack for teachers is bulky.

I am not sure how useful this would be for teaching staff but it has been useful for special needs study

Gosh I am bringing back a post from a long time ago!

I have had a look on several web-sites and most of the information is the same. We have an 8 month baby who has started with us, and she has Downs Syndrome. We have chatted with the mum for further information, and she has given us some.

Does anyone have experience of caring for a baby with Downs Syndrome, and can you offer any practical information for my baby room staff? Obviously all children are different, but any words of wisdom would be great.

DfES quote ES49; Early Support, Helping every child suceed - Developmental journal.
This is a hard backed folder with the 'expected' development of a child with Down syndrome. it has a step by step guide to areas of development 0 - 3 yrs. Published in 2006 in conjunction with the Down Syndrome educational trust - so upto date info.

The Down's Syndrome Association has lots of advice, support and literature for parents, carer's, health and educational professionals.
