  1. Offering the experience before teaching the skill. I always liked to do mono printing to start with to get them to explore and experiment with the paint before trying to make sense of how to use it then introducing the paper over the top.

I'm about to go out but I'll come back on later with a fuller reply :)

  2. The enormity of what I have to do is rather overwhelming. I need to do some work on our outdoor areas and I have all the FS paperwork to put together. That said I'm looking forward to getting stuck in.

  3. What's a dongle? and could one of these be of any use to those without wifi?

its a pre paid thingy you can plug in to your usb, it looks like a memory stick.

Just had a thought, if you have an ipad at the setting which has 3G to use for tapestry could you look in to getting a GiffGaff sim for it, you can then pay a certain amount for your access.

  4.

I might be showing my age here- but I thought a widget was something someone invented years ago so that they could put beer in cans (rather than largers) so when you poured it it had a nice foamy beer top.....

I remember that ad with Jack Dee and the penguins. I can't unsee it now

  5. I liked it, just don't like that it is on at the same time as Holby city and Saving lives at sea! Talking about saving lives at sea, big shout out to the lifeboat crews, lifeguards and Coastguards, so much respect and admiration for them they are truly brave heroes.

I agree, I am a hardcore Holby City fan  so I recorded bake off and watched Holby. Really enjoyed bake off, and like I can fast forward through the ads.

  6. I know it wouldn't be cheap but I think I would look for an independent educational psychologist with a reputation for assessing pupils with dyscalculia and pay for an assessment. A good educational psychologist will carry out in depth assessments, spend plenty of time really getting to the bottom of what you find difficult and why and make recommendations for you, any tutor you use and an exam board.

Armed with this extra understanding and evidence for exam adjustments, you should have a much better chance of getting the grade you would like.

I have had this done when I was doing my degree. I have the full report somewhere. I am due to be formally tested for Irlens in a few weeks.

  7. Thank you so much for your reply Mundia.

Recalling processes is definitely one problem! they just won't stay in my head! also the print tends to swim around which is why it was thought it was dyslexia at first (doesn't explain my intolerance to spelling mistakes though and that I was in the top group for English at school)

I never really got the right support, I was told I was lazy at school and didn't put the work in, because I was good at other things I was left to get on with it. Wouldn't happen these days of course.

  8. Hello,

long time no post but I could do with some words of wisdom/advice.

Back story- I am a qualified nursery nurse, worked in many settings from 1999. I did a degree in fine art in 2002 with a view to doing teacher training.I got a TA job in a school and rose up to working as an unqualified teacher, did GCSE maths at Adult education classes and upgraded my E to a D. Did a maths equivalency test and got 5% off the pass mark. Left it for a while while I raised my family. I went back to working in a school as a TA, I have recently qualified as a Forest School Leader and this is what i will be doing in September.

However, I feel I really need to swallow this frog and pass my maths once and for all and then maybe finally do my teacher training.

I have dyscalculia and suspected Irlens Syndrome which I am due to be tested for so I need all the help I can get.

Can any of you wise folk advise me on what resources to use for revision and perhaps how to get round my issues so that I can finally nail this maths once and for all. I'm thinking that even if I don't do teacher training after this at least I will have that C pass in maths that is so essential these days.

    Thanks in advance!

  9. I had two staff members who got their DBS returned after the nineteen days stipulated (it had taken them 3 weeks after issuing it to actually send it out) and when I phoned to ask if they could apply for the annual update outside of the timescale because it was their fault, I was told no. What a stupid system! Luckily staff don't need to do it but it is just more convenient.

I had no idea about this update service until I had a similar situation. Tbh I think it should be compulsory to be in the update service. I have to go and do another dbs now for setting I work voluntarily for.

  10. When I did my nursery nurse training back in 1996, a lad from my school started on the course, he was really passionate and did really well with assignments but when he turned up to a home placement he had the door slammed in his face and his nursery placement suddenly weren't able to have him as a student, with that he left.

In my experience there are very few men who chose to work in early years, I would imagine the pay is a factor as well as the assumption it's "women's work" I've come across one other male in early years in 20 years and I think that's pretty poor.

I'm currently a TA for a male teacher in a large primary and he is fantastic, we are fortunate that we have a number of male staff in school which as a previous poster mentioned can influence and impact on children who may not have those sort of relationships in their lives.

  11. I'm not a fan of Christmas :(

Spent 4 Christmases working in retail and it seriously changed the way I look at Christmas, it's a huge money making machine that turns people into crazed fools who suddenly become desperate for chestnut purée at 6pm on Christmas Eve. Also my husband works in retail and he has to open on Boxing Day this year :(

I'm back in school now so I am looking forward to doing all those festive activities with the children e.g the frantic practising for a school play, sick viruses and chicken pox hitting the school, knackered staff begging for the end of Autumn term and overdosing on chocolate biscuits and tea.

For me, I just like a few quiet days with the children and our parents, a nice dinner and a few games, no fuss and frills just being together.

  12. Wow Inge, what a beautiful walk you have!

I've had to reset my target annoyingly. I have plantar fasciitis and it's getting worse and worse so I've had to drastically reduce my walking which I do not like! Need to lose these summer holiday pounds!

  13. Hello!

I ran a FSU from 2005-2009 back when our county head of children's services wasn't keen so we had to prove it to her.

It was a small village primary and pre school was on site, we took on the pre school and they were in with our reception children. There was me teaching and leading overall but I planned and worked alongside the pre school manager. We had large ratios so we were able to have full free flow provision.

The most important factors here were that I found the children who were in our pre school had higher FSP scores than those who had either attended another setting or had no provision at all, they also settled quickly because they knew the setting.

The school doesn't operate this system now as far as I know ( and I don't know the reasons for this as I left 5 years ago) but it worked brilliantly at the timeand I do think now due to the expectations that this sort of provison is seen less than it was.

    Hope this helps Anne :)

  14. Something for the weekend was much better when it went to Ch4 and become Sunday brunch so hopefully bake off will be just as successful. Although having it on the BBC just makes it very Erm British

  15. Ive got a Fitbit blaze which is the watch version basically a cheap version of the I watch. I had a Fitbit flex before then it pretty much fell apart. With this one I can see right away how many steps I've done, miles, calories and floors and I can record other workouts also as well as my heart rate.

I do the weekly challenges with friends with really helps spur you on to do more.

  16. I'm bereft! Poor Tom Daley. Was he pressure of expectation just to much for him in the end? When his coach was trying to console him, my heart broke for him.

I wanted to give him a hug, poor chap, he was so upset :(

  17. Oh I say fellow stationery fiends have you seen the range in Sainsburys - they really have some beautiful 'stuff' - I only looked mind, OK I might have touched but I managed not to buy  ::1a

Last year they had a sale on their stationary items and I had to be restrained from buying ALL the notebooks.

  18. You can wrap washi tape around pencils to help with the theme. (We don't have a Papaerchase locally - which with hindsight is probably a blessing)

Congratulations on getting onto Forest School training by the way. :1b :1b :1b

    xx

Oh yes I so need to do this.

Thanks louby loo, I'm so excited, I already have L1 so I am funding myself to do L3 (all the overtime will be worth it!)

  19. Maybe we could all have a 'hobbycraft' meet up    We could discuss 'stock control issues'

Ours is very conveniently quite near Staples and The Range.

Oh I LOVE staples, got myself two 4 colour pens with blue, pink, green and purple. Will be fab for my new TA job.

  20. Isn't there two types. One that goes on its on and one that needs antibiotics? I could b wrong.

Advise in settings I have worked in have been the children can attend as long as they have treatment but I personally think in settings with tinies they should be kept off because you can't tell a baby or toddler not to rub their eyes.
