  1. LOVE IT!

     

    we have a little girl who keeps telling us about her dog....she has said that he barks a lot and is there to guard the pub they live in (rough area!!). She has expressed some worries about the dog and has told us he lives in a cage. (thoughts of large guard dog in head yet???) he is called buster.(ok so must be something dangerous then????)

    So imagine my face today when buster comes to the door....small, fluffy pug/shiztsu cross who licked me all over !!!!

  2. 3.56 The premises and equipment must be organised in a way that meets

    the needs of children. In registered provision, providers must meet the

    following indoor space requirements25:

    • Children under two years: 3.5 m2

    per child.

    • Two year olds: 2.5 m2

    per child.

    • Children aged three to five years: 2.3 m2

    per child.



    25 These calculations should be based on the net or useable areas of the rooms used by the

    children, not including storage areas, thoroughfares, dedicated staff areas, cloakrooms, utility

    rooms, kitchens and toilets.


    From the statutory requirements and from previous experience i would always ring ofsted and give them the information...it will be recorded so any issues that pop up later can be resolved!! ;)

  3. hi starsdance sometimes twins can be quite aggressive with each other especially if it is not handled well at home but 5 weeks is a huge amount of time in a little ones life and you can do wonders in that period. Firstly i think i would try to separate a bit more so if one goes out can one stay in and then swop...if they dont like it you can say it is because they keep fighting and they are upsetting their friends...if they want to comply then they can stay together but there will be no fighting! How do you handle the bad behaviour...they are old enough to do some time out. Can you teach them some chasing games like Whats the time Mr wolf or duck duck goose? this way they can do the chasing but in a more controlled way and can start to make relationships with the other children(i have found renaming things like duck duck goose to superman superman batman works quite well!!) They do appear to be quite immature ...do they access open ended resources well...like sand/water play etc?

    I guess you need to consider the attention they are getting ...do they get as much attention for good and bad behaviour? and i would try to avoid words like nice and kind unless they really KNOW what this means and this may take some time to model

  4. you need to look at WHY they are doing it...what are they getting out of it? are they bored/need focus/need rest etc etc they will be getting something out of it...if you can find out what it is you are halfway there! I personally don't do time out at 2 i don't think it is effective but i do do time in which is where they get a cuddle and a calm sit down while an adult explains in simple terms what they have done wrong and what they need to do next time...try to avoid words like nice and kind unless they really understand what these things mean....go and play 'nicely' is one of those things i try to avoid....what does it mean????! phrases like we dont do that here because it hurts people are much easier to understand.Their key workers need to work closely with them and work out what they like to do....at 2 it doesn't matter if it is the cars every day (you can do lots of things with cars!) but often i find 2 year olds dont know how to play and entertain themselves

  5. I think that like cat a said explore whatever interests and play is going on, not ban because we feel uncomfortable with it.

     

    If your setting was on an army base or as with my friend her husband was part of the armed police, these need to explored as it is what some parents do for a living, hiding it or banning it I feel is wrong and gives out the wrong to those children who's career s involve arms

    we are very close to barracks....i have spoken about this to the soldiers and they have said they do not want their children playing with guns. I think using the word Ban is probably too emotive as it doesn't explore how this is discussed and dealt with.

  6. Does anyone have a gun play policy in their setting? Does anyone have a zero tolerance to `gun play in their setting?' I am doing an action research project on `gun play' and would value anyones views on this very complex topic.

     

    Please share your views on how your setting views gun play.

    I run my setting on pacifist lines. I don't really allow gun play and never have done (this came after a decision by our parents many years ago) I have decided i must have very unusual children because it often is not a type of play that i see and rarely do i have an issue with it. (and no they don't go and make guns behind my back!) There is however a big difference between super hero play and gun play

    As a setting i am often complimented on how calm the children are and we always have more boys than girls. As a child i played gun play with my brother and sister...and we used to 'shoot' people out of the garden gate but that was when programmes on tv always showed the goddies winning and the baddies losing. That is not what children see now. Like Catma i worry about the influences that some of my children experience. I also have a lot of children with additional needs who are confused by 'gun play' massages. So for my setting and the children i look after it is not right but i know there will be lots who disagree with me!

  7. he where do i start! we have a regular supply of carpet roll tubes we do all sorts with them!

    Rolling...cars/balls/marbles/trains etc how can you get them to go through quicker (angles etc)

    for sand ....you can cut and attach them to each other to make fab designs

    if you cut them in half lengthwise they make great tunnels

    If they're the really thick ones you can make stilts with them!

    they make good sound tunnels for speaking and listening and didgeridoos....try using flip flops to pat the ends to create music. etc etc etc!

  8. im not aware that there is any obligation to put development 'ages' on the check. I think i would be uncomfortable doing this when these children have only just started with us. Hopeytg i think i would be complaining to your EY advisor if this is their form that the inspector doesn't like.....they need to sort it out before any other settings get told off! If it does all the things that it needs to then there should be no issue

    Our renewal for membership with the PLA is due at the end of the month, however, we are slowly moving forward, towards becoming a Community Interest Company as we feel committee run pre-schools are a thing of the past.

    It will be much easier if we are no longer with the PLA and adhered to their rules and regulations... but we will need to find independent insurance. Do any of you have suggestions who we might try?

    what 'rules' do you feel you need to follow by staying with psla insurance? their constitution is for committees if you are no longer committee run you will have your own rules or articles in place ....so therefore their insurance is as good as anyone!
  10. Oh my goodness me, yet another example of our wonderful Ofsted doing/telling one of us one thing and another something else!!

    As I said we are open for 3.5 hours for two days a week (have been for years) and since January 2013 are also open for 6.5 hours for three days per week with no break in between morning & afternoon session. We have never paid the higher rate ( I think it's £50/£55 we pay) I did inform Ofsted in Dec 2012 what we intended to do but apart from a general acknowledgement to my email have never heard anything else about it. I thought we paid the lower rate as we are only open term time only.

    Finleysmaid if you are paying more perhaps you should contact them to ask why?

    Im beginning to wonder why we pay the highest rate??? i think if i remember rightly when we re-registered we put ourselves in every register as this was the advice at the time...i have a feeling that this is why ...i tried to look on the ofsted site but found the rates difficult to find...brain not working as i have the flu...so may have to find out when head's working!
