I recently went on a pre-moderation course. I teach in Kent. I think Kent could moderate in a much, much better way and had already shared my 'opinion' with my Early Years Advisors in September. I was very well received but heard nothing more.

 

After the course last week I again shared my concerns and again got good feedback, so much so, that the Lead Advisor has asked me if I could give her some more information about how other LAs do it (I am particularly interested in Marion's moderation!!!)

 

I am amazed that the LA's don't seem to share or talk to each other, but could you please let me know how you are moderated in your LA??

 

 

Just for the record, Kent ask us to bring a 'top, middle and bottom' child which just means you end up discussing individual children and NOT moderating observations from the same Profile point. It is a fundamental flaw.

Hi bungalow.

 

I've been talking to a couple of the LAs that take part in our subscription scheme about setting up a little area for talking between LAs about best practice and to allow the sharing of ideas. This would probably need to be a closed area as no LA adviser is going to want to admit to ignorance in an open forum - but it seems obvious that particularly some of the smaller LAs are not going to have the same breadth of experience as others.

 

You might want to mention to your advisers in Kent about the amount of discussion on FSP moderation that goes on here. Unfortunately they don't subscribe to the scheme, but they will still be able to read a lot of the discussions as guests. :)

I too am from Kent and spoke to Judy Vennar about Kent joining the forum. She said if I email her the details they would look into it.

:) Might be a bit of a sweeping judgement - have we moderated with other LAs is part of the questions we have to complete to send back to NAA annually about the processes we have gone through. I meet termly with 4 other boroughs' consultants and we discuss our methods etc, last time we looked at children's writing and agreed it between ourselves. HOwever not all Las may have easy links I suppose depending on their set up

 

This year we are asking colleagues to look at 1 scale from each of PSE/KUW and to share judgements for 3 ability levels for all points in that scale.
