hi all,

we have a child who joined us 2 terms ago, he spent the whole session standing at the back of the room just watching everyone, at first we thought it was a language barrier as he had not much english (mum is asian dad is english) but two terms later he understands everything you say and answers you when he feels like it........but dosnt want to interact at all. Any suggestions please????? :o

have you notice him watching any particular children that you could buddy him with? this worked with a little girl in our group who would sit at the same table all morning, encouraging a special friend gave her the confidence to move away from her safe space at the table

does he always stand in the same space/ area do you have any ideas what makes that space special to him? such as its quiet and away from the other children or its a good spot to watch all the room, he can see out of a window?

how does he react when other children are close to him?

yes he understands a lot and sometimes a staff member can coax him over to something, but if they get distracted he just moves back to his same spot, he just watches other children that are playing around him.
