Hi does anyone know where I can get weighted t-shirts and blankets in the UK for children with sensory integration disorders? I have been looking online but can only find US contacts.

All help gratefully recieved!!!!!

Weighted products can help some children with special needs, it sort of 'grounds' them and lets them feel where they are in space. The vests help alot with calming children through the day and blankets are often used at night or laying down etc - to you a bed may feel comfortable but to some children it feels as though they are floating or freefalling - having a weight around them comforts them and gives them stability. Sorry not a brilliant explanation but hopefully you'll get the gist!

How would you know if a child would benefit from wearing one? Are they 'prescribed' by specialists? Is it trial and error? Sorry to ask so many questions but thats what I do well! :D

As far as i know, an OT or physio might suggest one, but it is a matter of trial and error - it will work for some but not for others. Generally speaking children with Autism, ADHD, ADD or some form of sensory integration disorder may benefit. I'm no expert though!

Yes my son has sensory integration disorder, and when he is walking to/from school and playing in the playground etc he has to wear a backpack which contains one of those heavy bricks they use for practising lifesaving wrapped in a towel and a heavy book or bottles filled with water. The trouble with that is he hates wearing it during playtimes because it makes him look different (he's 8) and I thought the weighted t-shirt/vest would be more appropriate because he can put it on under his school coat or jumper and its less obvious.
