Guest Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 At the moment I work as a part-time teacher in a Nursery class and wondered how PPA time is managed in other Primary schools ? Any comments would be much appreciated!
Guest Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Hi, My school is a primary. I am the R teacher at the moment, after Christmas will be Y1. On a Friday we have a specialist day. Our person is an expert basketball/tennis coach and all the children have 45 mins. My time is Friady till 10.30 my HLTA is with my class to change etc. In the pm I have another 1hour again HLTA in class. The other staff use TA with supervising roles throughout the week. But we all get some time when on a Friaday. Hope it makes sense. Our part timers get time too. Abi

Sue R Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Just a quick interjection here - Hi Rhian and welcome!! Sue
Jackie A. Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 I am a part-time Nursery teacher. I teach the morning class and job-share with another teacher who has the afternoon class. As a part-timer, I am only entitled to one hour PPA time per week. I am not allowed to bank the time in order to have a slot that actually allows me to get things done. My PPa is on Tuesdays 9 - 10 am. The school has employed three part-time teachers to cover all the PPA (for this year anyway). In reality, my hour ends up at about 20 minutes, by the time I get away from the classroom, find somewhere quiet in the school to work, taking everything that I could possibly need with me! Also, because of the way that the routine in Nursery works (compared with the rest of the school), the covering teacher cannot just take responsibilty for one lesson in the timetable like she would do for the other year groups. So I end up planning, preparing, resourcing and usually tidying up as well. With the way it is organised at the moment I actually find it more hassle than it's worth! If I could have a whole morning every other week, I may be able to use it more resourcefully.
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Hi I am a part time teacher in Reception. My ppa time works out at 1 hour 20 minutes per week (I am having it now!) My TA covers it at the moment because we only have 15 children in the afternoon - after Christmas I think another TA will come in too. We are also allowed to 'bank' our time and use it that way if it is more useful - we have a very relaxed atmosphere here!! Jackie are you legally not allowed to 'bank' it or is that just your school? Seems madness to me!
Marion Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 As a full time reception teacher in a foundation stage unit my PPA time is............nil!
Marion Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 I should add the Full time Nursery teacher in the unit gets the same amount of PPA
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 We all get a full day each fortnight - its fantastic!! We have 2 full time supplies who do all our cover (18 classes in primary school)
basilbrush Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 I should add the Full time Nursery teacher in the unit gets the same amount of PPA 44214 I thought it was a legal requirement since september 05 that everyone should have it, 10% of your time... your union should be able to advise...
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 We also employ qualified Teachers and I get 2hrs 15 mins a week
Marion Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Why? I thought everyone should have it? 44220 Everyone else in the school gets half a day a week except the foundation staff..........head says no cash to pay for cover!
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Everyone else in the school gets half a day a week except the foundation staff..........head says no cash to pay for cover! 44246 At the moment our 2 NNEB's(the new Level 3'S ) provide the cover in our Reception and Year 1 classes for the teachers PPA time. A part-time teacher has been employed to cover the other classes which works out at 2 and a half days a week. As the Nursery teacher,I fit in my PPA time straight after the morning session. It's interesting to read how different schools are implementing the new rule.Do you think that things will change according to school budgets in future?
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Marion I can't believe you don't get any PPA especially as other staff get it. That is very unfair. Can't you do any thing about it? Can't your Head come in and cover? Are you happy about the situation?
Susan Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Marion, you are legally entitled to PPA time, you can not be refused it. I was hoping to get some work as a PPA cover teacher, but so far no luck. Obviously a cash flow situation in my neck of the woods but out of interest do your PPA cover teachers get PPA time or do you plan and prepare the work for them??
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 In our school all teachers have PPA time which is covered by TAs - but as alot of TAs are unhappy with the pay they are getting for it this may be being changed to one TA doing the whole schools PPA.
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Everyone else in the school gets half a day a week except the foundation staff..........head says no cash to pay for cover! 44246 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Sorry! I was so flabbergasted, I forgot to fill you in on our situation: I am f/t nursery teacher in an infant school. Our f/t time teachers take a day a fortnight , which we have regular supply teachers for. P/t I think take a day a month. I personally think anything less than a half day slot is little more than useless as you barely have time to set everything up before you have to put it away again.
Jackie A. Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 Susan, our PPA cover teachers are all .5 positions. They also get one hour PPA time a week and in theory plan, prepare and mark all work themselves.
Susan Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 Thanks Jackie, thats useful, if I ever manage to get any PPA cover work, Id like to know what to expect!!
Guest Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 I work in an independent school what is ppa? Planning preparation and assessment?
Marion Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 44283 Latest info from head is that we might get some in next finacial year YIPEEEEEEEEE!
catma Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 I'ld still talk to union, you can't be denied PPA whatever the budget says and it's not something HT can give or take away.. Head is in the wrong I think, and it is a STATUTORY entitlement so HT is even more wrong than wrong.
Marion Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 We have just had our OFSTED and as a result our head has agreed that the nursery teacher and I will get joint PPA time starting Monday Better late than never I supose!
michaelle Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 (edited) PPA is statutory - SEE YOUR UNION!!!! oops just seen your last post ABOUT TIME TOO - i would say!!! My daughter actually said today - 'you dont seem to be working as much at night since you have been having your thursday mornings' - I hadnt really realised so it just shows it is beginning to have some impact on my life!! More time to spend on foundation stage forum! Mx Edited January 19, 2006 by michaelle
Guest Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 What happens if your allotted PPA time is an INSET day?
Guest Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Yes PPA time should be reallocated, but from talking to alot of my friends this isnt happening because many classes are being coverd by TA's from other classes who can't be released any other time.
Guest Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Everyone else in the school gets half a day a week except the foundation staff..........head says no cash to pay for cover! 44246 I think you should definitely challenge this - you are entitled to ppa release the same as every other teacher in your school- by saying foundation stage can't have release is illegal talk to your union rep and or contact your union rep.Our school has a very tight budget and although the situation is not ideal nursery and reception are each covered by two nursery nurses and the other classes are covered at ppa time with teaching students or experienced classroom assistants. Your head is seriously devaluing early years? what does your early years coordinator say?
