Does anyone have any good ideas for activities that parents can do at home to link to a topic of 'machines'?

I have thought about giving instructions to their little 'robot' e.g. put away your book then get your coat. But I would like some more ideas if anyone has any good suggestions!

Well I suppose they could investigate the types of machines their parents use and why they use them, and what they would do to achieve the same effect without a machine to do it.
