Hi we have a lovely little westie that we got a year ago and we went with More than for insurance. I paid £13 a month for up to £7000 worth of vets fees. Thank goodness we took it out as Theo unexpectedly had a hip problem which eventually involved a full hip replacement costing over £4000! He is now only 15 months old!. I was dreading the renewal notice as over the last year we have paid £156 in premiums and they have paid us thousands! I knew we wouldn't be able to change insurance companies due to Theo's history but was pleasantly surprised with the renewal price which has gone up to £22 a month and the £7000 limit starts again. The small print states that we pay the first £70 of treatment plus 10% of the final bill. The £70 is only charged once for a course of treatment so though we were backwards and forwards to our vet and having blood tests and x-rays and then referred to a specialist small dog orthopaedic centre which again involved severl visits we only paid one lot of £70.

The other thing is that the speed with which morethan pay out was very quick! We paid the specialist bill on the tuesday, posted details to morethan and got a cheque on the friday!

They have provided exceptional customer service throughout and have a really good advisory phone line too.

good luck making a decision is it a bit of a minefield. We originally went with morethan as our neighbours who have two labs, recommended them.

I have 3 cats all insured with Sainsburys pet insurance.

Have had to claim twice and got money quite quickly.

They also payout for the lifetime of the illness not just a 12 month cover for any illness that some companies offered.

I wanted the illness side coverd as my previous cat Arthur had kidney problems and his drugs cost us about £40 a month for almost 2 years! At that time I had no insurance!

It was quite cheap when I started out about 8 years ago about £4 per cat but now I pay about £9 per cat.

I have an excess of £50 or £75 depending on the bill size!

It's the small print you need to read regarding your excess and how long they would cover an illness for.

Good luck!

It might be worth seeing if your Vet has an arrangement with a Pet Insurance Company. I paid £12 per month for my cat but it included free boosters and 20% off all treatments. On the other hand if your pet needs really expensive treatment then a commercial company would be better.

Things to consider...

annual cover that resets each year can exclude anything you have claimed for over the year..

so we made sure it covered a set amount per illness or a lifetime cover for illnesses.. these do cost more annually but peace of mind knowing that should they become diabetic or similar they are covered for more than a year..

some companies have an age limit too... check if they will not insure after a certain age.. particularly for dogs.. found many stopped at 8 or 10 years old when we last looked .

we ended up with RSPCA insurance for the cats which is a set amount per illness and lifetime of the animal for that illness, no age cut off.. when we had to claim for one cat the premium did increase but by only a few pounds per year, not excessive considering the treatment he had for a accident with a car we think.. major surgery and lots of follow up, in vets care etc..

Also look for if you have to pay and claim back or direct payment to the vets.. ours is direct to vet so we get the form , download online, and fill in our bit, give to vet who then completes and sends it off.. money we pay up front is just the excess..

once there has been a claim it is impossible to change and get the illness claimed for covered.. end up in a catch 22 situation.. either put up with increases or have that condition uninsured.

Do ask at your vet.. we have an additional care plan insurance that covers all annual vaccinations, flea and tic preventatives and worming stuff.. when we added up the annual cost of buying them all individually it was cheaper to have the vets plan.. about £10.00 cheaper per year per animal.. not much but with 3 of them ..turned out worthwhile when we found one not working and had to change the treatment.. so had lots of different types which would have cost a fortune to buy. it also includes 10% off food bought from the vet and all dental treatment if any is needed.. they often have plans like this and all will be slightly different..
