Maths Red Riding Hood

Hi Guys i need a problem solving activity for my top group in maths relating to number. Was thinking of a laying the table activity - perhaps red riding hood is having a tea party who is coming how many plates will she need etc??

How about different shaped cutters and some playdough. They have to make as many jam tarts fro Grandma so which shaped cutters will give you the most jam tarts?

An inspired suggestion Lorna - that will make the brain work and -- why perhaps did their friend get more/less from the same cutter too?

Have you read 'The Doorbell rang?' by Pat Hutchins. Ma has baked a plate of cookies and the 2 children share then the doorbell rings...people keep coming and they have to rework the sharing. Could you do something similair with storybook characters coming? They could do it practically with the playdough and jam tart tray.
