What about Bandura's Social Learning Theory, he believed that children learn from one another and adults, via observation, imitation and modeling. Perhaps you've heard of the Bo Bo Doll experiment.

Vygotsky's theory that children act head and shoulders above themselves in play. In role play they are acting in adult roles.

I know I should look it up but isn't one of Bruce's 12 features of freeflow play about rehearsing the future? Also she says something in there about using play to make sense of the world around them which is definitely a benefit of role play..
