Hi there,

Sara Knight's book has some very good risk assessment considerations in her book Forest Schools and Outdoor Learning in the Early Years.

I am planning constructing a fire pit and using it but not till next term or later I am afraid, so haven't got round to writing risk assessments.

If I was doing this I'd think about my own experiences.

Keep a bucket or two of water nearby.

Dont put the hot end of the stick into your hand!

Make toast from a distance to prevent it setting alight.

Stand down wind of the smoke.

Check you have no over hanging vegetation or timber buildings nearby!

Inform the neighbours before hand :o My friend had the firefighters at her door because the neighbours though she had a fire!!

Have fun. I love making a bonfire.
