I am currently working in a early years setting. We have a 3 year old dispaying really strange behaviour they have been with us for a short time but it is conerning behaviour.

The type of behaviour includes:

gets frustrated when others help him

repeats phrases several times

wants toys that other children have

has an awareness of hurting others because it doesn't like them

displays angry and sometimes volent (sp) behaviour

refuses food at the table but will eat if its a picnic

when conentrating sticks tounge out and rolls eyes and head around.

Do you any ideas what this could be?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Beth

I would suggets that you voice your concerns with your setting SENCO it may be that they have already picked up on concerns and be involved with outside agencies and forgot to pass the info on to you with you been a new member of staff. If the staff have not shown concern over the behaviour it may be worth going through your observations collected on the child with the SENCO

Hi Belle we have just started to record observations and are planning to watch them for a couple of weeks to see if there is some other behaviour we haven't seen this week. Don't really want the parents to think that we are making up what we see.

Might I suggest you try using the ABC method of observation, especially with the 'social' behaviours, ie: not sharing, getting angry, violent. There could be many reasons for your list, ie immaturity, frustration through lack of language ability, settling in/seperation anxiety.

How is his language development? ou mention repeating phrases, are tese echolalia (spl?), repeating what others say or is he just saying his own phrases repetetively?

Agree with Belle, to speak to SENCO, and whoevers role it is, a general chat with mum to talk about how she feels he is settling in etc. (without raising any alarm bells yet, but more to get an idea of how she feels he is developing, how is he in social situation outside the home etc?)
