Personally I think it is too early for most children and paper and pencil is harder to use than white boards and pens because more wrist and finger strength is required to make a mark.

I have used WOW words and the children do refer to them especially if it is a word they have contributed to the display. In the past I haven't used the sentences as a real display - just temporarily for the day and found the children would remember what we had written and would go over and "read" it (from memory) so this is something I want to develop more.
We did the training as a whole school in September so I'm just beginning to implement some of the ideas - if Alistair is reading I have asked for my sofa
and I've unearthed my granny's wooden potato masher!
Alistair's model is slightly different to how I worked before we had his training and I'm having fun
with my imaginary friend.

Big Talk in this form is very new so few schools will have used it but we have followed our own version for a few years which is very similar and has worked well from nursery.
Alistair will correct me if I'm wrong but the 10 mins Big Write in the Spring term is only for those children who are ready (last year I had 4 children and we did this as their adult focused activity every other week). If they aren't ready postpone it until they are.

You could tell the CLL lady that Letters & Sounds isn't statutory and you are delivering your own programme using some L&S activities. Basically she has no right to insist you deliver L&S in any prescribed way or even at all.

I use a precision teaching programme throughout the school called "Minute a Day".
The basic idea behind Precision Teaching is children are set a task to develop a skill or knowledge which they must complete in a set time (our version is a minute) so the children practise every day and how successful they are is recorded - the target being they improve from the previous day - until they complete the task.
We use "A Minute a Day" games - the children seem to like the games and do develop fluency but I know a lot of SeNcos question overall effectiveness...

We admit children on their third birthday in line with our LA policy
-
According to US news the mother herself is a police officer and the child was "subdued" with a 1 second charge from a taser (not shot) to prevent her from injuring herself while she was being arrested ... not saying I think it's right
-
It depends on LA admission policies - mine is single entry in September so all children start the Sept after their fourth birthday (as Rose is recommending) but other LAs operate January and April intakes so although these children will still only be four they spend a term or two terms less in a reception class - which Rose says puts them at a disadvantage ...

It's really down to what schools can afford - only 3 TLRs in my school and only since October

It must be a week for it... I heard we have obtained a statement for a child this week 100% support but it has been a long hard struggle all round.
I'd say phone your LA and nag and phone every day until they know your name (and you know they are groaning on the other end of the phone because it's THAT woman again!)
Parent Partnership & IPSEA can both offer advice and support. Usually you need reports from anyone involved in your child's care/life including you. You can apply yourself but basically it's down to providing evidence of need and evidence of what has already been tried and how effective it was.
Good Luck

Thank you Susan you said it much better than I.

I'm sorry Marion, but I still don't see how useful this would be for 3 year olds. Looks great for reception +.
Sam
I'm not sure about your nursery children but in our FSU many 3 year olds arrive with very little spoken language, single words combined with gestures seems to be their main means of communication. (I know there is research which shows this is a national trend). There is also research to show considerable differences in vocabulary size in under 7s. The research also links vocabulary to later achievement so it makes sense to me to expose very young children to high quality vocabulary and to teach them to use a great number of words than they may experience in their day to day lives. It is no coincidence that Taffy Thomas was appointed the first laureate for storytelling.
