Guest Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Does anyone have any activity ideas for a topic on Native North Americans Or know of any good websites, books or songs? Really would appreciate any help you can offer!
Marion Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 There are a number of creation stories which are good to share but each tribe has a different story http://www.ic.arizona.edu/ic/kmartin/School/
Guest Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 I did a topic a couple of years ago about Pocahontas. I had a large number of boys at the time and was working on visual literacy, using the disney film to explore the story as well as compare it with the story of the real Pocahontas (minus the cartoon animals!). I also ordered some lovely artifacts from the library service and we made our own dreamcatchers etc. I remember the children really enjoyed it and talked about it for ages afterwards. Hope this is of some help.
Rea Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Totem poles are good. Someone showed me some work the children had done at a school, all years contributing. The totem pole tells the story of the village but because they are carved of wood not many if any of the originals have survived. Type in totem poles in google and it'll give you loads of ideas. I bought a small one from amazon, you can buy one here Native american music is fab. I bought a CD from some men dancing and playing music in the street few months ago. If I can remember where I've left it I'll get back with a name.
