Guest
We have just been exploring floating and sinking in class. I was using a glass fish tank three quarters full of water. There was no way I could carry it to the sink to empty the water out, so I decided to ask the children for their ideas. First idea was to use a beaker/container and scoop out the water and carry to sink but through discussion they realised that it would take a long time and asked for ways that would be quicker. I had a large bucket nearby and a length of plastic tubing. One boy explained that all you needed to do was put one end of the tube in water and suck on the other end and then hold the tube over the bucket!!!!!! It worked. I was so amazed that he came up with the idea without prompting from me and told Head (who was on his way in to read a story to my class). He was impressed but explained that he has probably seen his parents do that when making "wine"! What experieneces these ex-pat children have in dry countries!!! Rather confirms why we do this job, I think! Seems a shame that the head put a bit of a damper on things - shows the child has used knowledge gained in another area of life, and is confident enough to share! How will you write this up as an observation - possibly with no mention of wine then?? Maz
