Guest justinece
HI I am doing my specialist practitioner research project on the effects of television on children's development. I have my two journals that say that it television can help children's literacy development but I cannot find any journals or publications that say that television causes detrimental effects on their development. Does anyone know of any journal articles that say tv has detrimental affect on literacy development. Only negatives I can find of tv seem to relate to violence not literacy. JacquieL
I'm not sure about any research articles but this am on the radio they were discussing the effects of television on children and young people, partly to do with obesity. I didn't listen to it properly but it sounded as if a new report is out about the effects. Sorry not to be more helpful but it might be worth listening to the news later. Deb
I saw something on the TV recently, saying TV was bad for children. One of the interviewees was the author of 'Toxic Childhood' - might be worth looking into? Sorry cannot remember her name, might have been on the BBC Breakfast programme so a search on their website might be useful
Beau
Have a look here and here. Don't know if any of it will be of use but it might set you off in the right direction.
Guest
found this ( American article) by doing a google search - t.v and literacy, there were many more links you might like to look at if you do the same google search criteria. good luck with your studies. less_TV_opens_doors_to_literacy.pdf
Guest
There was an article on the BBC this morning saying that the under 3's should not watch television at all, 3-7 year olds should only watch 1/2-1 hour, 8-11 year olds 1 hour and older than that 1 1/2 hours each day. I have looked on their web site to try and find out who had published the findings but there is nothing there. I suppose you could contact the BBC and ask them the information. Guest justinece
Thank you so much for all your replies. I have got the book Toxic Childhood and it makes alarming reading. One of the links has given me another journal thank you for that Linda. My main problem is that it has to be journal articles that I use. It cannot be newspaper articles, or books. I now have three so just need one more against tv and literacy development. I will keep trawling. Thank you all anyway.
Guest
Hi, I don't know if these documents are of any use. I'll post them anyway as they may be of interest to others. Film_Boards__violence.doc effect_of_tv___media_on_child_dev.pdf

Guest
You could link it with the rise in ADHD and Autism as having an effect on literacy amongst many other things. I can give you some links to articles, books, etc. about it. Dr Aric Sigman had a lot of criticts at his throat recently after he published his findings and can tell a few interesting and scary stories about research being prevented from being aired by the media (no shocks there). Another person to look up is Sue Palmer ( she does respond to emails too, if it helps) as her work may relate more to your study on literacy. She is also the author of Toxic Childhood. Martin Large, another author on the subject. Edited July 6, 2007 by Guest
