Lea Moderation

Braved the stormy weather to go to a LEA meeting as we are one of the 25 schools to be moderated for the foundation stage.

They take so much for granted, we were advised to be available to talk to the moderators,that means supply cover for the morning (there is no money given for this)

They will want to see planning,assessments ,e-profile, evidence for three children (top,middle,bottom ability) they will observe these children for 20 mins to check our judgements.Talks to teacher.head and teacher etc....

 

They also mentioned that next year they will have targets to reach (oh no )

We are one of the schools being moderated this year. My LA does 50% each year but its very informal compared to what you describe.

I cant help feeling that I'm glad my own children are nearly through education.

 

Why do these poor children have to jump through so many hoops?

The whole idea is to moderate the teachers not the children but this doesn't seem to be the practice in all LAs.

You are moderating the judgements but seeing the children in action can be a useful part of getting a feel for the general level of attainment - if the teacher says they've got 7 scale points in reading you might read with them to see if you agree on that general level and so on. The general practice for moderation is given to LAs in a document annually and there are forms we have to fill out to show how we have gone about the process in accordance with the guidance so it's not quite as disparate as people may think. We are also moderated as samples of training etc are watched annually to ensure consistency of the message that is being delivered nationally. I had an NAA official watch me last year. Moderation however should, as it says in the handbook, start in the setting and the role of the LA is to ensure that judgements across the settings are similar so that FS data is reliable and usable. We also have to make sure settings are visited at least 1 time every 4 years with meetings available in between. However local issues can be taken into account.

 

Heads are responsible for ensuring that practitioners are able to take part in a moderation exercise annually and we are responsible for ensuring they are given that info in advance so this should not come as a shock to them!!

I still don't get it why we have to present a top/middle/bottom for different points rather than showing a range within one point-this would make the progression more obvious surely

Weve been asked to show 3 examples for the points they are looking at in PSE and KUW

Ours is the same Marion but we have been told to produce evidence for 3 ability levels but across 3 profile statements i.e. for PSE we have to show a top/mid/lower but for 3 diff profile steps

ours are three for the same profile points which as you say makes more sense
