Jules
Please note that this tutorial is related to the old EYFS. For information about the new EYFS 2021, please click here. ‘Next Observations’ are generated automatically by Tapestry. They are suggestions of what you can look out for in areas that haven’t been assessed for a child within a term. You can find them by looking at a child’s profile card on the Children tab (1), you can find the link for 'Next Obs' by clicking on a child's name (2). You will then find 'Next Obs' in the drop down list (3). Clicking on 'Next Observations' will take you to a page where you can select the child, year and period you wish to focus on. You will then see the areas where you haven’t recorded any assessments for your selected child (1). Underneath each of these areas Tapestry will offer suggestions for what to look for as you observe this child (2). Once you have made an assessment for a child in an aspect, that aspect will be removed from this list. This screen is really useful for identifying any gaps in observations for an individual child and for providing prompts as you think about the experiences you can provide to support this child in this particular area. It can support reflective practice by prompting you to ask questions about the child and why observations may not have been made in a certain area and to think about what resources and interactions could be introduced to enhance the child’s development. In order to make the Next Observations visible to parents you will need to go to your control panel (1) > user permissions (2) > select the relatives tab at the top (3) > in the 'Children' section, click on the 'Edit' button in the 'View Next Steps & Next Observations' field (4). This will allow you to set the default to apply to all relatives and set up individual user permissions if you wish.
